Ternary metal oxide nanorods (Ni0.5Cu0.5Co2O4) as efficient positive materials for non-enzymatic glucose sensing and fuel cell application

Kaige Qu et al.

Summary: Ternary metal oxide nanorods Ni0.5Cu0.5Co2O4 were synthesized via a hydrothermal process and demonstrated high activities for glucose oxidation. The modified electrodes with Ni0.5Cu0.5Co2O4 nanorods exhibited enhanced non-enzymatic glucose sensing performance compared to pure phase NiCo2O4 and CuCo2O4. Furthermore, the direct glucose fuel cells with Ni0.5Cu0.5Co2O4 anode displayed significantly higher power density than CuCo2O4 and NiCo2O4. The improved performance of Ni0.5Cu0.5Co2O4 nanorods is attributed to the incorporation of third metal atoms into the spinel lattice. These findings suggest that Ni0.5Cu0.5Co2O4 nanorods hold promise as catalysts for glucose sensing and fuel cell applications.

Grain boundary enriched CuO nanobundle for efficient non-invasive glucose sensors/fuel cells

Huijuan Yang et al.

Summary: In this study, CuO nanobundles with high density and homogenous grain boundaries were prepared using a cascade-assembled strategy. The role of grain boundaries (GBs) in glucose oxidation reaction (GOR) activity was thoroughly investigated, showing that GBs contribute to faster glucose mass transfer and lower glucose oxidation barriers. This study sheds new light on the importance of GBs in optimizing GOR catalyst nanostructures.
