Zooming into the Inner Helmholtz Plane of Pt(111)-Aqueous Solution Interfaces: Chemisorbed Water and Partially Charged Ions

Jun Huang

Summary: The double layer on transition metals, such as platinum, exhibits metal-solvent interactions and partially charged chemisorbed ions. A refined model is proposed that considers a continuous spectrum of solvent molecules, partially charged ions, and different planes for chemisorbed ions and solvent molecules. The model offers an alternative interpretation for capacitance data of Pt(111)-aqueous solution interfaces and raises questions about the existence of a pure double-layer region on a realistic Pt(111) surface.

Ab Initio Simulations of Water/Metal Interfaces

Axel Gross et al.

Summary: Structures and processes at water/metal interfaces are crucial for electrochemical energy conversion and storage, photoconversion, sensors, and corrosion. They also provide a model system for studying solid-liquid interfaces, combining concepts from chemistry and physics. The interactions between water-water and water-metal are similar in strength, resulting in a competition for the structures at water/metal interfaces. Ab initio molecular dynamics simulations are the preferred method for modeling these interfaces, but they require substantial computational resources.

Implicit Solvation Methods for Catalysis at Electrified Interfaces

Stefan Ringe et al.

Summary: Implicit solvation is an effective coarse-grained approach in atomic-scale simulations, commonly used in modeling electrochemistry and electrocatalysis, but faces challenges such as describing the entire double layer forming at the solid-liquid interface within tractable supercell sizes in DFT. Additional experimental or high-level theoretical data is needed for further advancement of this methodology in the SLI context.

Microscopic EDL structures and charge-potential relation on stepped platinum surface: Insights from the ab initio molecular dynamics simulations

Peng Li et al.

Summary: Through ab initio molecular dynamics simulation, it was found that at the Pt(553)/water interface, chemisorbed O-down water molecules gather at the (110) step sites, while the (111) terrace sites are covered by H-down water molecules, resulting in a more positive potential of zero charge (PZC) compared to extended low-index Pt surfaces. The change in surface charge density around PZC is primarily dominated by the coverage of chemisorbed water molecules, while EDL charging plays a key role in the change in surface charge density away from PZC.

A first-principles study of water adsorbed on flat and stepped silver surfaces

Xiaohang Lin et al.

Summary: The structural, electronic, and vibrational properties of water layers on Ag(100) and Ag(511) surfaces have been studied using first-principles calculations and ab initio molecular dynamics simulations. The most stable water structures and their vibrational spectra have been obtained. The results show that the water layer on the stepped Ag surface has high stability and crystal-like structure with long-range ordering at 140 K. The temperature increase from 140 K to 300 K leads to a red-shift in the vibrational spectra on Ag(100) due to changes in the number of H-bonded hydrogen. On Ag(511), a three-fold splitting of the O-H stretch mode is observed, which can be explained by the unique water structure on the stepped Ag surface.

Understanding the Electric Double-Layer Structure, Capacitance, and Charging Dynamics

Jianzhong Wu

Summary: Significant progress has been made in recent years in theoretical modeling of the electric double layer. However, understanding the microscopic details of the electrochemical interface and charging mechanisms under realistic conditions remains a major challenge. This review explores theoretical methods to describe the equilibrium and dynamic responses of the electric double layer structure and capacitance in electrochemical systems, with special emphasis on recent advances in studying nonclassical behavior of the electric double layer.

Modeling stepped Pt/water interfaces at potential of zero charge with ab initio molecular dynamics

Ao Chen et al.

Summary: The structures and potentials of zero charge (PZCs) of stepped metal/water interfaces were investigated. It was found that the step density significantly influenced the interface structures and chemisorbed water distribution. The step sites were preferred for water chemisorption, and the PZCs of stepped interfaces were generally smaller than that of flat surfaces. The Volta potential difference was found to be almost the same for interfaces with different step densities, despite differences in structure and charge transfer.

Unraveling molecular structures and ion effects of electric double layers at metal water interfaces

Lang Li et al.

Summary: Electrocatalysis plays a crucial role in the practicability of green energy technologies. In this study, we investigate the structures and properties of electric double layers (EDLs) through ab initio molecular dynamics simulations of electrified Ag(111)/water interfaces. Our calculations successfully reproduce the subtle differences in experimental capacitance curves caused by ion effects. We find that positively charged Ag(111) water chemisorption can strengthen on weak binding, contributing to the hump in differential capacitance due to electronic effects. Additionally, bulky ClO4 increases the EDL width and decreases the water content at interfaces, and steric repulsion forces the formation of a second layer of ions at very positive potentials. These detailed factors determine the EDL capacitances that depend on the nature of counter ions.

Modeling electrified metal/water interfaces from ab initio molecular dynamics: Structure and Helmholtz capacitance

Jia-Bo Le et al.

Summary: In this article, recent progress in modeling electrified metal/water interfaces using ab initio molecular dynamics (AIMD) is reviewed, focusing on the relationship between the structure of electric double layers (EDLs) and the dielectric property of interface water, as well as the variations in the structure of interface water on metal electrodes under different potential conditions. The potential-dependent behavior of chemisorbed water on Pt(111) surface and its correlation with the differential Helmholtz capacitance peak observed by experiment are also elucidated, providing insights for future development in ab initio modeling of electrochemical interfaces.

Summary: In this study, a machine learning aided molecular dynamics method is proposed to evaluate the hydration free energy of atoms and molecules adsorbed at liquid-solid interfaces. The calculated hydration free energies indicate that only the hydroxyl group adsorbed on the Pt(111) surface attains a hydration stabilization, which is attributed to differences in the adsorption site and surface morphology.

By combining classical and quantum mechanical parts, a hybrid density-potential functional for the electric double layer grand canonical potential is obtained. Numerical implementation demonstrates the model's effectiveness, particularly showing oscillating density of counterions near the metal surface when using the FMT for the reference system.
