Effect of Water Vapor on Oxidation Processes of the Cu(111) Surface and Sublayer

Young Jae Kim et al.

Summary: The catalytic properties of copper-based catalysts depend on the oxidation states of Cu. This study utilized near-ambient pressure scanning tunneling microscopy (NAP-STM) and near-ambient pressure X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (NAP-XPS) to observe the oxidation processes of Cu(111) in real time. Dry oxidation started at the step edges and proceeded to the terraces as a Cu2O phase, while humid oxidation showed Cu2O generation at upper steps. The difference in oxidation mechanisms was attributed to the presence of water molecules.

Tuning CO2 Hydrogenation Selectivity through Reaction-Driven Restructuring on Cu-Ni Bimetal Catalysts

Kasala Prabhakar Reddy et al.

Summary: Modifying the electronic structure of nickel-based catalysts is a promising strategy to tune the selectivity of CO2 hydrogenation. In this study, well dispersed Cu-Ni bimetallic nanoparticles were synthesized and used for selective CO2 hydrogenation. The Cu0.5Ni0.5/gamma-Al2O3 catalyst exhibited higher CO2 conversion and CO selectivity compared to monometallic catalysts.

Metal Encapsulation-Driven Strong Metal-Support Interaction on Pt/Co3O4 during CO Oxidation

Daeho Kim et al.

Summary: The strong metal-support interaction (SMSI) has a significant impact on the catalytic performance of supported metal catalysts, playing a central role in the modern chemical industry. However, understanding SMSI under realistic conditions remains challenging. This study provides evidence of SMSI between Pt and Co3O4 using both three-dimensional and two-dimensional model catalysts. The presence of Pt-Co3O4 interface, demonstrated by the formation of a Co3O4 overlayer on Pt nanoparticles, enhances catalytic activity and offers insights for designing high-performance heterogeneous catalysts.

Catalytic boosting on AuCu bimetallic nanoparticles by oxygen-induced atomic restructuring

Taek-Seung Kim et al.

Summary: Understanding the structure-activity relationship of silica-supported Au-based bimetallic nanocatalysts in CO oxidation is crucial for elucidating active sites and catalytic mechanisms. In this study, we uncover that the oxygen-induced atomic restructuring of AuCu nanocrystals leads to the formation of a CuOx/Au heterostructure, resulting in enhanced catalytic activity for CO oxidation. By using density functional theory calculations, we rationalize the formation of the reactive heterostructure on the catalyst.

Interspersing CeOx Clusters to the Pt-TiO2 Interfaces for Catalytic Promotion of TiO2-Supported Pt Nanoparticles

Mi Yoo et al.

Summary: We proposed an interface-engineered oxide-supported Pt nanoparticle-based catalyst, which exhibited improved low-temperature activity toward CO oxidation. The CeOx-TiO2 hybrid oxide support was synthesized by wet-impregnating 1 wt % Ce on TiO2, and the Pt/CeOx-TiO2 catalyst was prepared by impregnating 2 wt % Pt on the CeOx-TiO2 support. The formation of Pt-CeOx-TiO2 interfaces opened up the interface-mediated Mars-van Krevelen CO oxidation pathway, leading to additional interfacial reaction sites for CO oxidation. The specific reaction rate of Pt/CeOx-TiO2 for CO oxidation was increased by 3.2 times compared with Pt/TiO2 at 140 degrees C.

The facet effect of ceria nanoparticles on platinum dispersion and catalytic activity of methanol partial oxidation

Kasala Prabhakar Reddy et al.

Summary: In methanol partial oxidation, platinum-supported nano cube CeO2 catalyst showed higher turnover frequency, while nanosphere catalyst exhibited higher selectivity towards methyl formate. The observed ceria shape effect is associated with shape-dependent platinum dispersion and oxidation states. Reductive platinum and mono-dentate methoxy group were found to be responsible for the higher turnover frequency through in situ studies.
