Recent progress in atomistic modeling of light-harvesting complexes: a mini review

Sayan Maity et al.

Summary: This mini review focuses on recent advances in the atomistic modeling of biological light-harvesting (LH) complexes. Multiscale methods are required to investigate the dynamical and spectroscopic properties of LH complexes due to their size and sophisticated electronic structures. The recently developed multiscale approach based on the density functional tight-binding framework has shown superior performance in describing the internal vibrational dynamics of pigment molecules and yields spectral densities in good agreement with experimental data.

Hybrid functionals with local range separation: Accurate atomization energies and reaction barrier heights

Moritz Bruetting et al.

Summary: This work explores the self-consistent implementation of a local range-separated hybrid and discusses different forms of the local range-separation function. Experimental results demonstrate that this approach is significantly better than common global range-separated hybrid functionals in terms of atomization energy, reaction barrier height, and total energy of atoms. Furthermore, promising results are obtained for equilibrium bond lengths, harmonic vibrational frequencies, and vertical ionization potentials, highlighting the potential and flexibility of this approach.

The results show that the redox potential values for certain chlorophylls are higher in the green sulfur bacterium than in photosystem I, while the values for the Fe4S4 cluster are similar. These differences are attributed to the presence of alternative and missing proteins in the green sulfur bacterium.

The origin of unidirectional charge separation in photosynthetic reaction centers: nonadiabatic quantum dynamics of exciton and charge in pigment-protein complexes

Hiroyuki Tamura et al.

Summary: Unidirectional charge separation in PbRC and PSII is elucidated using nonadiabatic quantum dynamics calculations and time-dependent density functional theory with a QM/MM/PCM method. In PbRC, Tyr-M210 near the accessary bacteriochlorophyll reduces the energy of the intermediate state and accelerates charge separation, while in PSII, charge separation in the inactive branch is prevented by a weak electronic coupling due to symmetry-breaking of the chlorophyll configurations. Excitons in the inactive branch of PSII can be transferred to the active branch via direct and indirect pathways.
