Cooperativity and reactivity properties of medium-sized boron clusters: a combined density functional theory and information-theoretic approach study

Wenbiao Zhang et al.

Summary: This study systematically examined the cooperativity and reactivity properties of neutral and negatively charged boron clusters. The results showed that neutral boron clusters exhibit positive cooperativity, while negatively charged boron clusters exhibit negative cooperativity. The reactive sites were found to be located around the cluster periphery, and boron atoms can exhibit both electrophilic and nucleophilic behavior. Additionally, the study observed helical spin density distributions in negatively charged boron clusters, resembling helical molecular orbitals observed in allenes, cumulenes, and oligoynes.

Molecular Electrides: An In Silico Perspective

Ranajit Saha et al.

Summary: This article introduces the definition and classification of electrides, as well as the application of computational methods and criteria. The authors discuss in detail the computational methods and basis sets applicable for molecular electrides, and thoroughly discuss the main criteria for the identification of electrides. They also present systems with similar properties but are not considered as molecular electrides, and discuss the applicability of electrides in catalytic processes.

BSinGe4-n+ (n=0-2): prospective systems containing planar tetracoordinate boron (ptB)

Prasenjit Das et al.

Summary: The potential energy surface (PES) of BSinGe4-n+ (n = 0-2) systems was explored using density functional theory (DFT). Global minima structures of the systems were found to have a planar tetracoordinate boron (ptB) center. The neutral states of the systems did not contain ptB in their global minimum structures. The stability and charge distribution of the systems were analyzed, and the sigma/pi-dual aromaticity of the structures was predicted.

CSinGe4-n2+ (n=1-3): prospective systems containing planar tetracoordinate carbon (ptC)

Prasenjit Das et al.

Summary: Density functional theory calculations were used to explore the potential energy surface of CSinGe4-n2+/+/0 systems. The study found that the global minimum structures contain a planar tetracoordinate carbon, which may exist in the gas phase.

Planar Hexacoordinate Carbons: Half Covalent, Half Ionic

Luis Leyva-Parra et al.

Summary: In this study, the first global minima containing a planar hexacoordinate carbon (phC) atom are reported, achieved by replacing oxygen with heavy chalcogens to induce a negative charge on the C atom. Detailed chemical bonding analyses indicate that carbon is covalently bonded to chalcogens and ionically connected to alkali metal cations.
