Graphene oxide nanofiltration membranes with confined Na+ in two-dimensional nanochannels

Guoke Zhao et al.

Summary: The interactions between metal cations and graphene derivatives significantly impact the properties and structures of graphene-based devices. Metal cations are commonly present in feeding solutions under pressure-driven separation conditions, acting as target solutes and modifiers of the structure and transmembrane resistance of graphene oxide (GO) membranes. The presence of hydrated Na+ expands the nanochannels in GO membranes, facilitating water molecule passage, while hydrated Mg2+ accumulates at the edges of GO sheets, reducing the cross-sectional area and transport pathways, increasing water molecule transmembrane resistance.

Graphene oxide nanofiltration membranes with confined Na plus in two-dimensional nanochannels

Guoke Zhao et al.

Summary: The interactions between metal cations and graphene derivatives can significantly alter the properties and structures of graphene-based devices, affecting their performance. Metal cations are commonly present in feeding solutions under pressure-driven separation conditions and can act as both target solutes and modifiers for graphene oxide (GO) membranes. This study reveals the influence of hydrated Na+/Mg2+ on the two-dimensional nanochannels of GO membranes under pressure-driven conditions. Hydrated Na+ expands the nanochannels, facilitating water molecules' passage, while hydrated Mg2+ reduces both the cross-sectional area and the number of transport pathways, increasing the transmembrane resistance of water molecules.

Realizing ultrahigh nanofiltration performance based on small flake reduced graphene oxide membranes

Shuai Wang et al.

Summary: Graphene-based membranes have gained attention in desalination and water treatment due to their unique physical and chemical characteristics. However, the permeability-selectivity trade-off of graphene oxide membranes has limited their real-world applications. This study demonstrates the feasibility of small-flakes reduced graphene oxide membranes for nanofiltration, achieving higher water permeance and maintaining high rejection rates. The research sheds light on improving the performance and stability of graphene oxide-based membranes.

Separation of mono-/di-valent ions via charged interlayer channels of graphene oxide membranes

Qingbo Huang et al.

Summary: In this study, a graphene oxide (GO) membrane with charged interlayer channels was developed for the separation of mono-/di-valent ions. The membrane achieved selective transport of monovalent ions by utilizing size-sieving and electrostatic repulsion. The introduction of polyethyleneimine (PEI) into the interlayer channels not only controlled the charge property but also increased the hydrophilicity of the membrane surface. The optimal GO-PEI membrane exhibited high permeation rates and selectivity for monovalent ions.

Extra-thin composite nanofiltration membranes tuned by γ-cyclodextrins containing amphipathic cavities for efficient separation of magnesium/lithium ions

Ying Zhao et al.

Summary: In this study, a new strategy for preparing nanofiltration membranes with excellent overall magnesium-lithium separation performance was proposed using gamma-cyclodextrins and polyethyleneimine. The hydrophilic surface and hydrophobic cavity of gamma-CDs enhanced the water flux of the membrane and effectively screened magnesium and lithium ions. The PEI/gamma-CDs-TMC membrane showed a higher permeation flux and a significantly reduced active layer thickness.

A Lamellar MXene (Ti3C2Tx)/PSS Composite Membrane for Fast and Selective Lithium-Ion Separation

Zong Lu et al.

Summary: The study involves the creation of a 2D laminar membrane with Li+ selective transport channels by stacking MXene nanosheets with poly(sodium 4-styrene sulfonate) (PSS) containing active sulfonate sites. This membrane shows excellent Li+ selectivity in ionic mixture solutions and high Li+ permeation rate. The selective and rapid transport of partially dehydrated Li+ within subnanochannels is attributed to precisely controlled interlayer spacing and weaker ion-terminal interaction.
