Theoretical study on the mechanism of super-stable mineralization of LDHs in soil remediation

Xiao-Jie Zhao et al.

Summary: The problem of soil/water pollution by toxic heavy metals is becoming more prominent and poses a serious threat to human production and life. Layered double hydroxides (LDHs) have been used as excellent mineralizers to form super-stable mineralization structures. This study investigates the driving force and mechanism of LDHs super-stable mineralization and the mineralization of heavy metal cations by Ca2Al-LDH through density functional theory (DFT) and molecular dynamics (MD) simulation methods. The results show that LDHs have a smaller solubility product than the corresponding hydroxides and carbonates, leading to their super-stable mineralization. The electrostatic binding mechanism is favored for the removal of heavy metal cations by LDHs, regardless of the introduction of vacancies.

Super-Stable Mineralization of Ni2+ Ions from Wastewater using CaFe Layered Double Hydroxide

Haoyuan Chi et al.

Summary: The research highlights the preparation of a stable CaFe-LDH stabilizer with high efficiency in removing nickel ions and exhibits great potential in removing nickel ions from real electroplating wastewater. The isomorphous substitution of Ca2+ by Ni2+ in the laminate of LDH plays a key role in the mineralization process, transforming CaFe-LDH to NiCaFe-LDH, which shows improved electrocatalytic and photocatalytic activities. This work opens up a promising path for the removal of Ni2+ ions from wastewater and utilization of recycled nickel resources.

Removal and magnetic recovery of heavy metals and pesticides from soil by layered double hydroxides modified biotite

Hanhan Huang et al.

Summary: A novel LDH@Bt composite with a three-dimensional hierarchical structure was successfully fabricated via in-situ growth method. The LDHs were uniformly dispersed on the Bt surface, resulting in improved removal performance for Cu2+/Pb2+ heavy metals and GLY/MCP pesticides compared to LDHs and Bt alone. Kinetics of heavy metals and pesticides removal were well described by intraparticle diffusion and pseudo-second-order model. Adsorption isotherm data showed better accordance with Freundlich model for Cu(2+)and Pb2+, while Langmuir model fitted well with GLY and MCP data. Different adsorption mechanisms were proposed for the removal of Cu2+/Pb2+ by precipitation and GLY/MCP by surface adsorption. The application and recovery ability of LDH@Bt composite in soil were evaluated, showing promising potential for the remediation of heavy metals and pesticides contaminations.
