CO2 capture (including direct air capture) and natural gas desulfurization of amine-grafted hierarchical bimodal silica

John-Timothy Anyanwu et al.

Summary: Amine grafting under hydrous conditions using hierarchical bimodal mesoporous silica has shown promising results in developing adsorbents with high amine loading and superior CO2 capture performance. The diffusional properties of the hierarchical bimodal silica supports contribute to greater amine dispersion and utilization, resulting in significantly higher CO2 adsorption capacity and amine efficiency compared to traditional SBA-15 type adsorbents. Wet grafted hierarchical bimodal silica demonstrated excellent cyclic stability and breakthrough capacity, making it a promising candidate for CO2 capture from ambient air and industrial gas streams.

Systematic study of the effect of the co-solvent on the performance of amine-based solvents for CO2 capture

Ismail I. I. Alkhatib et al.

Summary: Aqueous amines technology is mature for large-scale CO2 capture, but high energy regeneration remains a drawback. Water-free and water-lean solvents are attractive alternatives to reduce regeneration energy, with ethylene glycol showing promise as a co-solvent for minimizing CO2 solubility reduction and decreasing enthalpy of absorption. Systematic studies on the effect of co-solvent on thermodynamic properties for optimizing the separation process are needed.

Effect of Amine Functionalization of MOF Adsorbents for Enhanced CO2 Capture and Separation: A Molecular Simulation Study

Daniel Bahamon et al.

Summary: Different types of amine-functionalized MOF structures were analyzed for their potential in post-combustion carbon dioxide capture and separation through molecular simulations. Two potential structures with high cyclic working capacities were identified, with mmen-functionalized structure showing better adsorption and cyclability. It was also found that more amine functional groups grafted on the MOFs or full functionalization of the metal centers do not necessarily lead to better CO2 separation capabilities.

Understanding the Effect of Water on CO2 Adsorption

Joel M. Kolle et al.

Summary: Carbon capture from large sources and ambient air is an effective strategy to mitigate greenhouse gas emissions. Among the various technologies, CO2 adsorption is a popular method due to its energy efficiency. The presence of water vapor in air and industrial gas streams rich in CO2 has a significant impact on CO2 adsorption, with water acting as both an inhibitor and promoter depending on the adsorbent used. Further research is needed to fully understand the effects of water on CO2 capture using different materials.

Theoretical investigation of CO2 adsorption mechanism over amine-functionalized mesoporous silica

Kivanc Basaran et al.

Summary: This study investigated CO2 adsorption over functionalized mesoporous silica and found that hydrogen bonding interactions with surface silanols and neighboring amines were critical for the formation and stabilization of the adsorption products. It was also shown that surface silanols played a significant role in the thermodynamics and kinetics of the reaction mechanism, and could directly participate in the reaction. The impact of amine functionality on the reaction mechanism was found to be less conclusive compared to surface silanols under the conditions employed in this study.
