The Past and the Future of Langmuir and Langmuir-Blodgett Films

Osvaldo N. Oliveira et al.

Summary: The Langmuir-Blodgett (LB) technique allows for controlled assembly of organic molecules with almost 100 years of history. While LB films are seldom considered for practical applications today, they offer unique opportunities in mimicking cell membrane models and exploiting nanoarchitectonics concepts.

Determine both the conformation and orientation of a specific residue in α-synuclein(61-95) even in monolayer by 13C isotopic label and p-polarized multiple-angle incidence resolution spectrometry (pMAIRS)

Chengshan Wang et al.

Summary: Protein's magic function stems from its structure, but analyzing membrane proteins poses challenges due to their unique characteristics. Traditional analytical techniques like X-ray crystallography and NMR struggle to provide high-resolution results for membrane proteins, which make up a significant portion of genomes. Surface FT-IR techniques offer a low-resolution evaluation, and the introduction of 13C isotope and p-polarized multiple-angle incidence resolution spectrometry (pMAIRS) provide a novel and complementary method to address membrane peptides/protein structure with high resolution, even in monolayer.

Perfluoroalkanes remain on water surface even after volatilization: Affinity analysis of fluorinated solvent with water surface

Takafumi Shimoaka et al.

Summary: Perfluoroalkyl (Rf) compounds have poor solubility in most solvents except fluorinated solvents. A single Rf chain with a short length exhibits a strong affinity to water molecules. This study investigates the liquid layer of perfluoro-n-alkanes on water using infrared external reflection spectrometry.

Nanoarchitectonics for Analytical Science at Interfaces and with Supramolecular Nanostructures

Katsuhiko Ariga

Summary: The concept of nanoarchitectonics has been proposed for materials development with high-level structural regulations, focusing on analytical sciences such as sensing/detection and related device construction. This review article specifically discusses the application of nanoarchitectonics in analytical science, with a focus on interface and nanostructures, highlighting molecular sensing and sensors using self-assembled supramolecular nanostructures. Recent examples of molecular recognition at the air-water interface and fabrication of sensing materials through self-assembly of fullerene units are discussed, showing common benefits between nanoarchitectonics and analytical science.
