Combinatorial selectivity with an array of phthalocyanines functionalized TiO2/ZnO heterojunction thin film sensors

Yuvaraj Sivalingam et al.

Summary: The development of electronic noses requires control over the selectivity pattern of each sensor. This can be achieved by combining organic and inorganic materials to transfer the chemical sensitivities of the sensor into measurable electronic signals. In this study, a hybrid material made of phthalocyanines and a bilayer structure of ZnO and TiO2 was used to demonstrate this approach. The results showed that the sensitivity spectrum of the phthalocyanines led to changes in the resistance of the sensor, even when exposed to compounds that cannot change the resistance of pure phthalocyanine layers. The combination of different phthalocyanines resulted in a virtual array of six sensors, showing remarkable selectivity towards a set of test compounds.
