Neutron capture of UO2 targets prepared by spin-coating assisted combustion synthesis

Ashabari Majumdar et al.

Summary: A new method combining spin coating and solution combustion synthesis (SCS) was developed to prepare uranium dioxide (UO2) targets, and the prepared targets showed good neutron irradiation tolerance and suitability for neutron capture experiments. The structural changes in the target after irradiation did not affect data collection. This method can be widely used to prepare targets for other actinide elements.

Preparation and characterization of isotopically pure Mo targets for nuclear science measurements

R. Kelmar et al.

Summary: Isotopically pure molybdenum targets are essential in nuclear science measurements. Previous methods for preparing molybdenum targets are challenging and time-consuming, therefore reliable and straightforward methods are crucial. We developed a new double-step method to produce molybdenum targets with uniform coverage, which were characterized using various techniques.

Structure and properties of amorphous uranium dioxide

Simon C. Middleburgh et al.

Summary: Amorphous uranium dioxide has been modeled on the atomic scale using a combination of quantum mechanical and classical forcefield methods, revealing structures consistent with experimental patterns. Non-stoichiometry is accommodated more readily in the amorphous system, with a predicted spin-glass magnetic structure and a computed surface energy similar to grain boundary bubbles in UO2.

Effects of irradiation on mechanical properties of nuclear UO2 fuels evaluated by Vickers indentation at room temperature

I. Zacharie-Aubrun et al.

Summary: Vickers indentation was used to evaluate the hardness and apparent fracture toughness of unirradiated and irradiated UO2 fuels, showing irradiation significantly affects mechanical properties. Analysis of hardness and toughness of fuels at different burnups and structures indicates the weakness of grain boundaries in irradiated fuels.

Hyperstoichiometric Uranium Dioxides: Rapid Synthesis and Irradiation-Induced Structural Changes

Jordan M. Roach et al.

Summary: This study involved the rapid and straightforward combustion synthesis of UO2.12 nanomaterials and thin films using uranyl nitrate-glycine-water solutions. Structural changes induced by irradiation were investigated, revealing a complex chemical mechanism in the combustion process and the role of oxygen incorporation in the formation of UO2.12. In situ transmission electron microscopy showed that the complex compound decomposes to directly produce UO2, and irradiation with Ar2+ ions led to unusual defect-simulated grain growth and enhanced chemical mixing.

A Critical Review of High Burnup Fuel Fragmentation, Relocation, and Dispersal under Loss-Of-Coolant Accident Conditions

Nathan Capps et al.

Summary: High burnup fuel has been observed to severely fragment under temperature transient conditions, potentially leading to fuel relocation and dispersal in a loss-of-coolant accident scenario. While various testing programs have identified phenomena and governing parameters, there remains a significant data gap in connecting research to commercial application. Further research is needed to fill data gaps and enhance understanding of fuel behavior under severe conditions.

Irradiation-Driven Restructuring of UO2 Thin Films: Amorphization and Crystallization

Ashabari Majumdar et al.

Summary: Combustion synthesis was used to deposit thin UO2 films on aluminum substrates to investigate irradiation-induced restructuring processes. The films showed stability under irradiation and no sputtering degradation. Irradiation triggered a crystallization process, converting the entire amorphous material into a highly crystalline film.
