Magic angle spinning dynamic nuclear polarization solid-state NMR spectroscopy of γ-irradiated molecular organic solids

Scott L. Carnahan et al.

Summary: In the past 15 years, magic angle spinning (MAS) dynamic nuclear polarization (DNP) has been used to increase the sensitivity of high-resolution solid-state NMR spectroscopy experiments. Recently, gamma-irradiation has been found to generate evenly distributed free radicals in various solids. This study tested the applicability of gamma-irradiation as a method of creating stable free radicals for MAS DNP experiments on organic solids and pharmaceuticals. It was found that significant DNP enhancements could be achieved in certain organic molecules, but aromatic rings hindered the generation of substantial DNP enhancements.

Molecular Dynamics and Surface Interactions of Nickelocene Adsorbed on Silica: A Paramagnetic Solid-State NMR Study

Jordon W. Benzie et al.

Summary: This study investigates the adsorption and dynamics of nickelocene on mesoporous silica using solid-state NMR. The results show that the surface-adsorbed nickelocene molecules exhibit liquid-like motion within the pores, rapidly exchanging places with surface-attached molecular states. The study also quantifies the prevalence of horizontally oriented nickelocene molecules at low temperatures. Additionally, it is found that nickelocene and ferrocene mix on the molecular level on the silica surface.
