Quantifying Force and Energy in Single-Molecule Metalation

Karl Rothe et al.

Summary: An atomic force microscope was used to investigate the attractive interaction between a probe and a phthalocyanine molecule adsorbed on Ag(111) during the process of adding a silver atom. The extracted energy from the experiment was compared to the energy profile determined by density functional theory.

Magnetic Interplay between π-Electrons of Open-Shell Porphyrins and d-Electrons of Their Central Transition Metal Ions

Qiang Sun et al.

Summary: Magnetism is commonly associated with d- or f-block elements, but can also be found in organic molecules with unpaired pi-electrons. This study presents a synthesis method for open-shell, pi-extended porphyrins containing magnetically active metal ions and investigates the magnetic interaction between pi- and d-electrons through experimental and computational approaches.

On-Surface Synthesis of Square-Type Porphyrin Tetramers with Central Antiaromatic Cyclooctatetraene Moiety

Eduardo Corral Rascon et al.

Summary: The study presents a surface chemistry route for synthesizing square-type porphyrin tetramers with a central COT ring, coexisting with other oligomers. It demonstrates the access to surface-supported, unsubstituted porphyrin tetramers that are not easily achievable by conventional synthesis means. The molecular structures and electronic structure, including the antiaromaticity induced by the COT moiety, are elucidated through atomic-level characterization and density functional theory modeling.

Assembly and Manipulation of a Prototypical N-Heterocyclic Carbene with a Metalloporphyrin Pedestal on a Solid Surface

Peter Knecht et al.

Summary: Controlling the arrangement of N-heterocyclic carbenes (NHCs) on solid surfaces is achieved by introducing Ru porphyrins as a control agent, allowing for precise and reversible functionalization on an atomic scale. This arrangement enables the creation of patterned structures on the nanometer scale through controlled manipulation.

Surface-Mediated Ring-Opening and Porphyrin Deconstruction via Conformational Distortion

Felix Bischoff et al.

Summary: The study demonstrates a surface chemical route to selectively break down a prototypical porphyrin species by achieving a distinct molecular conformation through specific interactions. This pathway enables ring-opening reactions by reducing the stability of the macrocycle, allowing for atomic-level characterization of the reaction intermediates and byproducts.

On-surface synthesis of singly and doubly porphyrin-capped graphene nanoribbon segments

Luis M. Mateo et al.

Summary: On-surface synthesis is a powerful tool for constructing large, planar, pi-conjugated structures that are inaccessible through standard solution chemistry, with graphene nanoribbons (GNRs) holding a prime position in nanoelectronics due to their outstanding properties. Using appropriately designed molecular precursors allows the synthesis of functionalized GNRs, leading to nanostructured hybrids with superior physicochemical properties. Porphyrins (Pors) stand out among potential partners for GNRs due to their rich chemistry, robustness, and electronic richness, but constructing GNR hybrids with such pi-conjugated macrocycles is challenging and examples are scarce.
