Role of Oxygen Vacancy in the Photocarrier Dynamics of WO3 Photocatalysts: The Case of Recombination Centers

Kosaku Kato et al.

Summary: Defects in powder photocatalysts have a significant impact on their photocatalytic activity. The presence of oxygen vacancies in WO3 was found to act as recombination centers, accelerating the decay of deeply trapped electrons. However, the effect of oxygen vacancies on carrier dynamics differs among various photocatalysts. The distance between defects plays an important role in determining the enhancement or reduction in photocatalytic activity.

Defect Engineering of Pt/TiO2-x Photocatalysts via Reduction Treatment Assisted by Hydrogen Spillover

Yukari Yamazaki et al.

Summary: The study revealed that the photocatalytic activity of rutile Pt/TiO2-x significantly increased with the reduction temperature, while the activity of anatase Pt/TiO2-x decreased and that of brookite Pt/TiO2-x remained unchanged. Electron-spin resonance analysis showed that rutile and brookite had similar defect sites after reduction, while anatase exhibited different resonance signals. The research demonstrated that the depth of inherent midgap states, depending on crystal phases, influences defect generation and subsequently impacts the photocatalytic performance of Pt/TiO2-x.

Core-Shell Double Doping of Zn and Ca on β-Ga2O3 Photocatalysts for Remarkable Water Splitting

Akira Yamakata et al.

Summary: The dual doping of Zn and Ca in polycrystalline beta-Ga2O3 photocatalysts effectively enhances the photocatalytic activity, achieving a quantum efficiency of 71% under 254 nm illumination. The induced concentration gradient of the dopants inhibits recombination and assists trapped electrons to diffuse from bulk to surface, accelerating surface reactions. This cooperative effect provides an attractive strategy to enhance photocatalytic activity, applicable to a variety of photocatalysts.
