Fluorescence Resonance Energy Transfer Measurements in Polymer Science: A Review

Sara Valdez et al.

Summary: Fluorescence resonance energy transfer (FRET) is a non-invasive characterization method that provides high spatial resolution at the nanometer scale, and has been widely used in the study of synthetic polymer systems. By utilizing fluorescence and FRET, researchers can gain insights into the morphology, dynamics, assembly, and interface properties of polymers.

FRET-Integrated Polymer Brushes for Spatially Resolved Sensing of Changes in Polymer Conformation

Quinn A. Besford et al.

Summary: Polymer brush surfaces that can alter their physical properties in response to chemical stimuli have potential as new surface-based sensing materials. This study reports on ultrathin polymer brush surfaces integrated with FRET technology for optical sensing of changes in liquid mixture compositions, with high spatial resolution. The sensitivity and real-time sensing capabilities of these brush surfaces make them promising for enhanced surface-based sensing at complex interfaces.

Removal of Trithiocarbonyl End Group of RAFT-Polymerized Poly(stearyl acrylate) and Effect of the End Group on Thermal and Structural Properties

Eri Oishi et al.

Summary: The study focused on the influence of a long alkyl end group on the thermal and structural properties of RAFT-polymerized PSA, revealing that the long alkyl group from TTC decreases the melting point and semi-crystalline structure in the case of low molecular weight PSA.

Glasses denser than the supercooled liquid

Yi Jin et al.

Summary: The study reveals that under certain conditions, the density of thin vapor-deposited films of N,N'-bis(3-methylphenyl)-N,N'-diphenylbenzidine (TPD) can exceed their corresponding SCL density by as much as 3.5%, and can even exceed the crystal density. This high-density supercooled liquid (HD-SCL) phase is only favored in thin films and can rapidly transform back to the ordinary SCL state when film thickness exceeds 60 nm during vapor deposition.

Load-bearing entanglements in polymer glasses

Cynthia Bukowski et al.

Summary: Through a combined approach of experiment and simulation, the study quantifies the role of entanglements in determining the mechanical properties of glassy polymer blends. The research shows that not all entanglements carry substantial load at large deformation, and a model is developed to describe the number of effective, load-bearing entanglements per chain as a function of blend ratio. The film strength and toughness are quantitatively described by a model that only accounts for load-bearing entanglements.
