Ab Initio Molecular Dynamics Study of Aqueous Solutions of Magnesium and Calcium Nitrates: Hydration Shell Structure, Dynamics and Vibrational Echo Spectroscopy

Banshi Das et al.

Summary: This study investigates the hydration shell structure, dynamics, and vibrational echo spectroscopy of aqueous Mg(NO3)2 and Ca(NO3)2 solutions using ab initio molecular dynamics simulations. The results show that the hydration shells of Mg2+ ions are stronger and more rigid compared to Ca2+ ions, leading to slower dynamics of hydrogen bonds and vibrational spectral diffusion. The stronger electric fields of Mg ions also affect the structural and dynamical properties of water molecules.

Anomalous temperature dependence of the experimental x-ray structure factor of supercooled water

Niloofar Esmaeildoost et al.

Summary: The study investigated the structural changes of water upon deep supercooling using wide-angle x-ray scattering at SwissFEL. It found that the oxygen-oxygen structure factor exhibited a strong increase in amplitude for the second diffraction peak, while q(2) showed an unprecedented positive partial derivative with respect to temperature below 236 K, indicating a less dense local ordering. The findings suggest that liquid water forms a pentamer-based hydrogen-bonded network with low density under deep supercooling conditions.

Temperature-Dependent Liquid Water Structure for Individual Micron-Sized, Supercooled Aqueous Droplets with Inclusions

Liora E. Mael et al.

Summary: By using micro-Raman spectroscopy, the study found that the equilibrium of partially and fully hydrogen-bonding water interactions changes as temperature decreases, leading to a phase transition to form ice. Furthermore, the thermodynamic parameters for the interchange between partially and fully hydrogen-bonded water for different types of supercooled droplets have been determined through temperature-dependent measurements.

On the role of hydrogen-bond exchanges in the spectral diffusion of water

Zeke A. Piskulich et al.

Summary: The study provides a detailed analysis of the time scales and activation energies associated with spectral diffusion in water molecules. The results show that the longest time scale of spectral diffusion is not directly related to hydrogen-bond exchanges, with the dominant contribution coming from hydrogen-bond rearrangements. The study highlights the complexity of the dynamics involved in hydrogen bonds in isotopically dilute water.

Temperature-dependent dynamic structure factors for liquid water inferred from inelastic neutron scattering measurements

G. Noguere et al.

Summary: Dynamic structure factors for liquid water were calculated using a composite model, with systematics of model parameters deduced from neutron scattering data analysis and molecular dynamics simulations. The composite model was found to improve the comparison to experiments, particularly regarding the frequency shift and broadening of vibrational bands.
