Local-Field Effects in Linear Response Properties within a Polarizable Frozen Density Embedding Method

Aparna K. Harshan et al.

Summary: In this work, a polarizable frozen density embedding (FDE) method, called FDE-pol, is proposed for calculating polarizabilities of coupled subsystems. The method combines FDE with an explicit polarization model to bypass freeze/thaw cycles and avoid nonadditive kinetic potentials. An atomic polarizability calculation method based on Hirshfeld partition is introduced to describe the polarization of the frozen environment. The results show that the Hirshfeld partition-based method can predict molecular polarizabilities close to the basis set limit. Furthermore, local field effects are emphasized for describing the response properties of coupled subsystems accurately.

Multiconfigurational SCF and Short-Range DFT Combined with Polarizable Density Embedding: Comparison of Linear-Response and State-Specific Solvatochromic Shifts of Acrolein and Para-nitrophenolate in Water

Willem Van den Heuvel et al.

Summary: The polarizable density embedding model is combined with the multiconfigurational self-consistent field and MC-srDFT electronic structure methods to study solvatochromic shifts. Differences between linear-response and state-specific solvent shifts are analyzed, showing that the discrepancies arise not only from the different responses to polarizability but also from the static part of the environment potential.

A polarizable three-layer frozen density embedding/molecular mechanics approach

Franco Egidi et al.

Summary: This study introduces a novel multilayer polarizable embedding approach, dividing the system into three portions, with two parts treated using density functional theory and their interaction based on frozen density embedding theory, while both interact with a classical layer described using fluctuating charges. The model's efficacy is demonstrated by extending the formalism to linear response properties and applying it to the simulation of excitation energies of organic molecules in aqueous solution.
