A limit on variations in the fine-structure constant from spectra of nearby Sun-like stars

Michael T. Murphy et al.

Summary: The study found that the fine structure constant alpha varies by less than or similar to 50 parts per billion within 50 parsecs from Earth. Precise measurements of alpha from 17 stars provide a reference for stellar measurements with an ensemble precision of 12 parts per billion.

Fundamental physics with a state-of-the-art optical clock in space

Andrei Derevianko et al.

Summary: Recent advances in optical atomic clocks and optical time transfer have opened up new possibilities for precision metrology in fundamental physics tests and timing applications. A proposed space mission concept would place a cutting-edge optical atomic clock in an eccentric orbit around Earth and establish a high stability laser link with earthbound stations. The primary objective of this mission is to test the gravitational redshift with a sensitivity far beyond current limits, as well as explore other aspects of relativity, search for dark matter, and establish a highly accurate international time/geodesic reference.

DFT exchange: sharing perspectives on the workhorse of quantum chemistry and materials science

Andrew M. Teale et al.

Summary: This paper provides an informal review and discussion on the history, present status, and future of density-functional theory (DFT) by 70 workers in the field. The format of a roundtable discussion allowed participants to express their views through 302 individual contributions to a preset list of 26 questions. Supported by a bibliography of 777 entries, the paper offers a comprehensive snapshot of DFT in 2022.

Improved Limits for Violations of Local Position Invariance from Atomic Clock Comparisons

R. Lange et al.

Summary: A study compared two optical clocks based on Yb-171+ and measured the frequency ratio of their electric quadrupole and electric octupole transitions, finding improved accuracy. The study also analyzed potential violations of physical laws and improved limits on the temporal variations of fundamental constants and the proton-to-electron mass ratio.
