Ammonia Solvation vs Aqueous Solvation of Samarium Diiodide. A Theoretical and Experimental Approach to Understanding Bond Activation Upon Coordination to Sm(II)

Summary: Coordination-induced desolvation or ligand displacement by cosolvents and additives is a key feature responsible for the reactivity of Sm(II)-based reagent systems. In this study, the coordination of ammonia to SmI2 was examined and compared to the coordination of water. The results showed that SmI2-ammonia system exhibited a much higher rate of arene reduction compared to SmI2-water system, and the coordinated ammonia demonstrated one of the largest degrees of N-H bond weakening reported in the literature.

Mg(II) and Ca(II) Microsolvation by Ammonia: Born-Oppenheimer Molecular Dynamics Studies

Summary: The structural and energetic features of Mg2+ and Ca2+ cations in ammonia microsolvation environments were investigated through molecular dynamics simulations. Mg2+ clusters showed a slight contraction after the initial six ammonia molecules, while Ca2+ clusters formed a different structure with more than eight ammonia molecules in the first solvation shell at room temperature.
