Phase behavior and extraction mechanism of methanol-n-hexane separation using choline-based deep eutectic solvent

Xingyi Liu et al.

Summary: Deep eutectic solvents (DESs) have attracted increasing attention as green solvents for azeotropic separation due to their low vapor pressure, nontoxicity, and low cost. In this study, three choline-based DESs were used to separate methanol-n-hexane azeotrope, and their extraction efficiencies were compared. The extraction mechanism of methanol by DESs was studied using molecular dynamics (MD) method, and the experimental and simulation results were in good agreement. Among the three DESs, ChCl/EG(1:2) showed the highest extraction efficiency for methanol. The role of Cl- in the liquid-liquid equilibrium (LLE) was found to be crucial, primarily provided by the electrostatic force.

Difference between ammonia and urea on nitrogen doping of graphene quantum dots

Yanyun Zhu et al.

Summary: Nitrogen-doped graphene quantum dots (N-GQDs) with prime fluorescence properties were synthesized through a simple one-pot hydrothermal method by using citric acid as carbon source and ammonia (A-GQDs) or urea (UGQDs) as nitrogen source. The differences in particle size and nitrogen-containing doped rings between A-GQDs and U-GQDs lead to the differences in optical properties. Optimizing reaction conditions can result in U-GQDs with high quantum yield (QY) of 54%.
