Placebo effects on cutaneous pain and itch: a systematic review and meta-analysis of experimental results and methodology

Joseph S. Blythe et al.

Summary: This study conducted a systematic review and meta-analysis on the placebo effects in cutaneous pain and itch. The findings revealed that a combination of classical conditioning with verbal suggestion produced stronger placebo effects on pain, while verbal suggestion alone had weaker effects on itch. Other methodological and demographic factors did not significantly affect the magnitude of placebo effects.

An experimental investigation into the mediating role of pain-related fear in boosting nocebo hyperalgesia

Mia Athina Thomaidou et al.

Summary: This study aimed to test the effects of experimentally induced pain-related fear on the acquisition and extinction of nocebo hyperalgesia in healthy participants. The findings suggest that fear of high pain may be a key contributor to the amplification of nocebo hyperalgesia, only when high pain is experienced and not when it is merely anticipated.
