Resilience in survivors of critical illness: A scoping review of the published literature in relation to definitions, prevalence, and relationship to clinical outcomes

Summary: Survivors of critical illness face challenges in their recovery, and resilience is important for their mental health. This scoping review found that resilience has not been widely researched in critical care patients. The quality of published studies on resilience following critical illness was low, with variation in measurement tools and timing. Estimates of low resilience ranged from 28% to 67%. Higher resilience levels were associated with better psychological outcomes in critical care patients and survivors. Future studies should use validated resilience assessment tools, determine the optimal timing, and explore prevalence, associations with outcomes, and interventions to promote resilience in well-defined populations.

Development and Validation of a Brief Warfare Exposure Measure Among US Iraq and Afghanistan War Veterans: The Deployment Risk and Resilience Inventory-2 Warfare Exposure-Short Form (DRRI-2 WE-SF)

Summary: This study aimed to develop and validate a short form warfare exposure measure to assess the impact of warfare experiences on the health of military veterans. Two validated scales from the Deployment Risk and Resilience Inventory-2 were used to capture a broad range of stressful warfare experiences, but the combined measure was too long for some settings. The results showed that the short form measure was reliable and valid, and significantly reduced completion time.

Embedded rehabilitation in major trauma: Retrospective pre-post observational study of service and patient outcomes

Summary: This study introduced a dedicated rehabilitation service into a Major Trauma Centre, leading to significant reductions in overall hospital length of stay and ICU length of stay, as well as a decrease in 30-day mortality and an increase in the likelihood of a good recovery according to Glasgow Outcome Scale. Embedded rehabilitation is crucial for improving trauma care and patient outcomes. Future research should focus on the impact of dedicated rehabilitation services on medium- and long-term outcomes.
