Photocatalytic Cross-Couplings of Aryl Halides Enabled by o-Phosphinophenolate and o-Phosphinothiophenolate

Ni Shen et al.

Summary: o-phosphinophenolate and o-phosphinothiophenolate are potent photocatalysts with strong reducing ability to activate aryl chlorides and bromides under visible light. Experimental and theoretical studies show that the good catalytic performance is attributed to the characteristics of the o-diphenylphosphino substituent, which allows them to function as effective visible-light-photoredox catalysts. These results suggest promising potential of synthetically modified phenolates and thiophenolates as photoredox catalysts.

Tatsuhiro Uchikura et al.

Summary: This study reports a dual-role EDA-SET/HAT photoreaction system for carbon-carbon bond formation using a phenol catalyst and aryl iodide. Irradiation of the EDA complex with visible light generates an aryl radical, which abstracts a hydrogen atom from an sp3 carbon to form an alkyl radical.

Synthetic reactions driven by electron-donor-acceptor (EDA) complexes

Zhonglie Yang et al.

Summary: The electron-donor-acceptor (EDA) complex, formed by dipole-dipole interactions between an electron donor and an electron acceptor, can be transformed into the excited state upon light irradiation, leading to electron transfer and subsequent reactions. Reactions involving EDA complexes are typically mild and do not require transition metal catalysts or photosensitizers, aligning with the principles of green chemistry.
