4,5-Disubstituted pyrenes from phenangermoles

Cheng-Gang Qian et al.

Summary: In this study, a new method for the synthesis of 4,5-disubstitued pyrene from phenangermoles via a Pd-catalyzed annulative pi-extension reaction was reported. Discriminated 4- and 5-position-substituted pyrene derivatives were achieved, showing the selectivity between phenangermoles and dibenzosiloles, as well as the reactivity difference between phenangermoles and phenansiloles. Successful transformation of arylalkylacetylenes under standard conditions has not been reported previously. The surprising compatibility of propargyl bromide allows the product to contain the benzyl bromide group, providing a convenient route for further derivatization.

Studies on the Origin of the Stabilizing Effects of Fluorinated Alcohols and Weakly Coordinated Fluorine-Containing Anions on Cationic Reaction Intermediates

Feng-Xian Tian et al.

Summary: Many synthetic methods using fluorinated alcohols as solvents have been reported, and adding weakly coordinated fluorine-containing anions can improve yields. The boosting effect of fluorinated alcohols is attributed to hydrogen bond activation. However, the mechanisms of how fluorinated alcohols stabilize cationic reaction intermediates and why weakly coordinated fluorine-containing anions improve yields have not been thoroughly studied.

Charge-Transfer Excitations within Density Functional Theory: How Accurate Are the Most Recommended Approaches?

David Mester et al.

Summary: The performance of density functionals for charge-transfer excitations is assessed using benchmark sets. RS-PBE-P86/SOS-ADC(2) achieves the most accurate results for both types of CT excitations. Global DH methods show unexpectedly excellent results for intramolecular transitions but have limitations for bimolecular complexes. Serious deficiencies and wrong long-range behavior of the XC energy are revealed for intermolecular CT transitions, making the application of LC-DH methods not recommended.

BN-Substitution in Dithienylpyrenes Prevents Excimer Formation in Solution and in the Solid State

Yannik Appiarius et al.

Summary: Boron-nitrogen substitutions have a strong impact on the optical properties of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), but the observed properties also depend on intermolecular interactions. This study compared a thiophene-flanked BN-pyrene with its all-carbon analogue in solution and in the solid state, and found clear differences in their optical properties and crystal packing motifs.

In this study, three blue emitters with a pyrene core decorated with triphenylamine or tetraphenylethylene units were presented. The designed compounds exhibited AIE properties and blue emission in the solid state. Two of the compounds showed enhanced thermal stability, making them suitable as emitter layers for blue organic light-emitting diode (OLED) devices. The devices demonstrated excellent electroluminescence emission, high exciton utilization efficiency, and low turn-on voltage.
