Photosynthesis of 3-Alkylated Coumarins from Carboxylic Acids Catalyzed by a Na2S-Based Electron Donor-Acceptor Complex

Hai-Yang Song et al.

Summary: A simple and practical electron donor-acceptor (EDA) strategy is reported for synthesizing various 3-alkylated coumarins from easily available coumarins and naturally abundant carboxylic acids under photocatalyst-, oxidant-, and additive-free and mild conditions. By using Na2S as the catalytic electron donor, a series of primary, secondary, and tertiary carbon radicals can be efficiently generated, and the EDA complex can be regenerated without the need for an alkaline additive.

Light-empowered contra-thermodynamic stereochemical editing

Peng-Zi Wang et al.

Summary: Creating, conserving, and modifying the stereochemistry of organic compounds is an important area of research in synthetic chemistry. Stereochemical editing, as an alternative strategy, allows for late-stage alteration of stereochemistry, but it often faces thermodynamic barriers. Photocatalysis, by using photogenerated radical species, can overcome these barriers and enable contra-thermodynamic stereochemical editing processes.

Photochemical Synthesis of Succinic Ester-Containing Phenanthridines from Diazo Compounds as 1,4-Dicarbonyl Precursors

Hai -Bing Ye et al.

Summary: Here we present a simple photochemical method for constructing phenanthridines with synthetically useful succinate units. The reaction proceeds under visible-light irradiation using cheap eosin Y Na as the photoredox catalyst and a diazo compound as the succinate precursor. A wide range of phenanthridines are obtained in moderate to good yields under the optimal conditions. The succinate units in the final heterocycles can be easily transformed into valuable structures such as gamma-butyrolactone, dihydrofuran-2(3H)-one, and tetrahydrofuran. Mechanistic experiments support the proposed mechanism.
