Visible light-driven acridone catalysis for atom transfer radical polymerization

Donglei Wei et al.

Summary: Acridone, a new type of visible light photocatalyst, has been developed for metal-free atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP). This photocatalyst has a low excited state potential and can initiate ATRP of vinyl monomers through oxidative quenching pathway. Kinetic study and light on/off reaction demonstrate the living/controlled nature of the polymerization by light. Block copolymers can be achieved by using PMMA as a macroinitiator, preserving the Br chain-end functionality in the synthesized polymers. Additionally, the polymerization can be conducted under air atmosphere, which provides inspiration for further applications of this type of photocatalyst.

Deciphering the Orientation of the Aromatic Spacer Cation in Bilayer Perovskite Solar Cells through Spectroscopic Techniques

Meenakshi Pegu et al.

Summary: In this study, the surface of 3D perovskite was engineered by introducing fluorinated or nonfluorinated aryl ammonium cation spacers, leading to improved performance and longevity of perovskite-based solar cells. The use of fluorophenethylammonium iodide (FPEAI) also showed lower nonradiative carrier recombination, indicating higher reliability and efficiency. The presence of fluorine substitution resulted in notable differences in orientation, with stronger van der Waals interactions playing a key role in governing orientation and performance enhancement.

Visible-Light-Induced Homolysis of Earth-Abundant Metal-Substrate Complexes: A Complementary Activation Strategy in Photoredox Catalysis

Youssef Abderrazak et al.

Summary: The mainstream applications of visible-light photoredox catalysis mainly involve precious metal Ru-II or Ir-III complexes or organic dyes with low photostability. Earth-abundant metal-based (MLn)-L-n-type complexes are evolving rapidly as alternative photocatalysts that offer economic and ecological advantages and access to complementary inner-sphere mechanistic modes, transcending the inherent limitations of ultrashort excited-state lifetimes. The process of visible-light-induced homolysis (VLIH) involves the formation of light-absorbing ligated metal-substrate complexes that undergo homolytic cleavage for further transformations.
