Role of craniofacial phenotypes in the response to oral appliance therapy for obstructive sleep apnea

Summary: This study aimed to explore the role of craniofacial features in the response to mandibular advancement devices (MADs) for the treatment of obstructive sleep apnea (OSA). The high mandibular plane angle was found to be an unfavorable factor for MAD treatment, requiring more protrusion to achieve a 50% reduction in apnea-hypopnea index (AHI). The vertical craniofacial pattern (gonion angle) and baseline AHI were identified as predictors of MAD treatment response.

Psoriatic arthritis of the temporomandibular joint: A systematic review

Summary: This study aimed to conduct a systematic review on temporomandibular joint (TMJ) psoriatic arthritis (PsA). A total of 23 publications with 151 TMJ PsA patients were included. Clinical symptoms of TMJ PsA included TMJ pain and sounds, limited range of jaw movements, preauricular swelling, malocclusion, headache, tinnitus, neck stiffness, and altered dietary function. Evaluation of TMJ included MRI, CT, and ultrasonography. Conservative therapy showed significant improvement in TMJ function.

Tongue strength and clinical correlations in Parkinson's disease

Summary: The strength and endurance of the tongue are significantly reduced in Parkinson's disease, and weakness in tongue lift may be an indicator of disease progression. Tongue strength is higher in the early stage of the disease and significantly different from that of more severe stages, suggesting that it is a sensitive indicator of disease progression. Selected items regarding swallowing quality of life are strongly associated with tongue strength.

Effectiveness of manual therapy applied to craniomandibular structures in temporomandibular disorders: A systematic review

Summary: This systematic review evaluates the effectiveness of cranio-mandibular manual therapy (CMMT) specifically applied to the craniomandibular structures on pain and maximum mouth opening in people with temporomandibular disorders (TMDs). The review includes six studies with a very low overall quality of evidence due to high heterogeneity and small sample sizes. Although CMMT shows improvement in pain and maximum mouth opening in the mid-term, only two studies show superiority compared to other interventions. More high-quality research is needed to determine the most effective manual therapy techniques for TMD patients.

Evaluation of the effectiveness of a mobile application in the management of dental anxiety: A randomised controlled trial

Association between relapses, stress, and depression in people with multiple sclerosis during the COVID-19 pandemic

Management of temporomandibular disorders: a rapid review of systematic reviews and guidelines

Summary: This study conducted a rapid review of systematic reviews and guidelines published in the past 5 and 10 years, respectively, to provide evidence-based management strategies for temporomandibular disorders (TMD). The findings suggest that a multi-modal conservative approach is recommended as the initial management for TMD. For patients with poor response to conservative measures, arthrocentesis, arthroscopy, or open joint surgery can be considered. Occlusal splint therapy is not recommended due to insufficient evidence.

Distribution of anxiety and depression among different subtypes of temporomandibular disorder: A systematic review and meta-analysis

Summary: This systematic review investigated the distribution and severity of anxiety and depression in patients diagnosed with different subtypes of temporomandibular disorder (TMD). The findings suggest that patients with myofascial pain are more anxious and more depressed than patients with other subtypes of TMD. Proper assessment of the psychological state of patients is essential for offering adequate treatment and management of each specific subtype of TMD.

Summary: This study aimed to evaluate the multidimensional aspects of pain in Burning Mouth Syndrome (BMS) and analyze its relationship with mood disorders, sleep, and quality of life. The results showed that BMS patients had significantly higher pain scores and disease-related scores compared to healthy controls. There was a linear correlation between pain and disease onset. The study suggested that a comprehensive analysis of BMS patients requires multiple tools to better understand the multidimensional aspects of pain.

Effects of Occlusal Plane Inclination on the Temporomandibular Joint Stress Distribution: A Three-Dimensional Finite Element Analysis

Summary: This study used finite element analysis to investigate the effect of occlusal plane inclination on stress distribution in the temporomandibular joint structures. The results showed that clockwise rotation of the occlusal plane increased compressive stress on the condyle and shifted the von Mises equivalent stress of the temporomandibular disc to the medial, posterior, and superior directions.
