In contrast to diatoms, cryptophytes are susceptible to iron limitation, but not to ocean acidification

Marianne G. Camoying et al.

Summary: This study investigates the response of two important phytoplankton groups in the Southern Ocean (cryptophytes and diatoms) to ocean acidification and iron supply. The results show that cryptophytes almost stop growing under low iron supply, while diatoms are unaffected. Under high iron conditions, ocean acidification stimulates the growth and carbon production of cryptophytes, but is not beneficial for diatoms. Under low iron supply, diatoms cope better with ocean acidification, but require more energy for photoacclimation.

Estimate of turbulent energy dissipation rate using free-fall and CTD-attached fast-response thermistors in weak ocean turbulence

Ichiro Yasuda et al.

Summary: Measurement of turbulence is crucial for understanding the vertical and diapycnal transport of heat, water, and substances affecting climate, nutrient supply, and marine ecosystems. This study demonstrates that the use of FP07 can effectively measure turbulent energy dissipation rate, especially in deep ocean observations where turbulence is generally weak. The results extend the range of turbulence measurements using the FP07 and highlight its applicability in turbulent observations.

Summary: A new technique for measuring ocean turbulence using fast-response thermistor has been developed, which shows that the numerical model overestimates the intensity of turbulence. This can be refined by comparing the model with observed results.

Iron and nutrient dynamics along the East Kamchatka Current, western Bering Sea Basin and Gulf of Anadyr

Jun Nishioka et al.

Summary: The analysis of iron and nutrient data in the East Kamchatka Current (EKC) in the western Bering Sea revealed the expansion of high-nutrient and low-chlorophyll waters, as well as the relationship between Fe supply and freshwater input from the Kamchatka Peninsula. The study also found the presence of an intermediate nutrient pool in the Kamchatka Basin, with decoupled cycles of Fe and Si from N and P. Furthermore, the chemical properties of water in the EKC on the Pacific side of the Kamchatka Peninsula were mainly influenced by the Western Subarctic Gyre circulation.

Probing the Bioavailability of Dissolved Iron to Marine Eukaryotic Phytoplankton Using In Situ Single Cell Iron Quotas

Yeala Shaked et al.

Summary: A new approach for quantifying the bioavailability of dissolved iron (dFe) to oceanic phytoplankton was presented. In situ dFe bioavailability was found to be higher than model Fe-siderophore complexes, and the k(in-app)/C ratio is important for predicting dFe uptake rates and residence times in low Fe oceanic regions. The method demonstrated applicability for constraining Fe uptake rates in earth system models, particularly in predicting climate mediated changes in net primary production in Fe-limited regions like the Equatorial Pacific.
