Cr-incorporated uranium nitride composite fuels with enhanced mechanical performance and oxidation resistance

Kun Yang et al.

Summary: Spark plasma sintering was used to fabricate Cr-incorporated UN composite fuels, and it was found that the addition of Cr improved the thermal conductivity, hardness, fracture toughness, and oxidation resistance of the fuels. The formation of a Cr enriched phase enhanced the liquid sintering characteristic. These findings are significant for enhancing the thermal-mechanical properties of UN fuels with well-maintained high fissile element density.

Uranium nitride (UN) pellets with controllable microstructure and phase - fabrication by spark plasma sintering and their thermal-mechanical and oxidation properties

Kun Yang et al.

Summary: Controlled microstructures and tailored grain sizes of dense uranium mononitride (UN) pellets were synthesized by spark plasma sintering (SPS) combined with high energy ball milling. The impacts of sintering conditions on fuel properties were investigated, achieving dense UN pellets with different microstructures and grain sizes.

Oxidation of UN/U2N3-UO2 composites: an evaluation of UO2 as an oxidation barrier for the nitride phases

Diogo Ribeiro Costa et al.

Summary: The study investigates the oxidative behavior of high-density UN/U2N3-UO2 composite fuels, showing that the oxidation resistance of the pellets does not significantly change with the increase of UN microspheres content, indicating that the UO2 matrix can effectively improve the oxidation resistance of the nitride phases.

Influence of Fe and Ni Doping on the OER Performance at the Co3O4(001) Surface: Insights from DFT plus U Calculations

Yuman Peng et al.

Summary: In this study, the oxygen evolution reaction (OER) at the Co3O4(001) surface was investigated using density functional theory calculations with an on-site Hubbard U term. The results show that the termination with octahedral Co and O ions (B-layer) has the lowest overpotential, and doping with Fe and Ni can effectively reduce the overpotential. Additionally, changes in oxidation states of surface ions and active sites of Co during OER were analyzed to gain further insight into the behavior of the system.
