Massive Release of CD9+ Microvesicles in Human Immunodeficiency Virus Infection, Regardless of Virologic Control

Eva Poveda et al.

Summary: A massive release of platelet-derived microvesicles occurs during HIV infection, some of which contain mitochondria. However, the proportion and mitochondrial density of these microvesicles are lower in HIV infection.

Plasma Cell-Free Mitochondrial DNA as a Marker of Geriatric Syndromes in Older Adults With HIV

Carrie D. Johnston et al.

Summary: This study evaluated the potential of plasma cfmtDNA as a biomarker for geriatric syndromes. The results showed that plasma cfmtDNA levels were associated with cognitive impairment and frailty in older individuals.

Circulating brain-derived extracellular vesicles expressing neuroinflammatory markers are associated with HIV-related neurocognitive impairment

Erika G. Marques de Menezes et al.

Summary: The study found that EVs expressing markers of monocyte activation and neuronal injury were elevated in HIV-infected individuals with cognitive impairment, suggesting that specific EV subsets may serve as novel biomarkers of neuronal injury in HIV infection. Additionally, levels of circulating platelet EVs were linked to monocyte activation, indicating a potential novel interaction in the pathogenesis of HIV-related cognitive impairment.

Circulating extracellular vesicles as new inflammation marker in HIV infection

Katia Falasca et al.

Summary: Circulating levels of total extracellular vesicles, EMVs and LMVs were significantly lower in HIV+ patients compared to healthy subjects, while platelet-derived extracellular vesicles were higher in patients. Proteomic analysis revealed the upregulation of gammaIFN and IL1 alpha, and down-regulation of OSM, NF-kB, LIF, and RXRA signaling in these patients.

Urine Cell-Free Mitochondrial DNA as a Marker of Weight Loss and Body Composition in Older Adults With HIV

Carrie D. Johnston et al.

Summary: This study found that higher levels of urinary cfmtDNA were more common in older adults with HIV who had poorer physical condition, including unintentional weight loss and lower fat and muscle mass. This suggests that urinary cfmtDNA may reflect pathophysiological aging processes in older adults with HIV, predisposing them to geriatric syndromes. Longitudinal investigation of urinary cfmtDNA as a biomarker of geriatric syndromes is deemed necessary.

HIV in the Brain: Identifying Viral Reservoirs and Addressing the Challenges of an HIV Cure

Michelle K. Ash et al.

Summary: Advances in antiretroviral therapy have prolonged the lives of people living with HIV by reducing viral levels, but challenges remain in eradicating the virus due to significant reservoirs in the central nervous system. Astraycytes and microglia in the CNS have been shown to harbor HIV even with treatment, emphasizing the need for optimization of curative strategies. Measuring the latent HIV reservoir and addressing neuroinflammation in the brain are crucial in developing effective treatment options for HIV-associated neurocognitive disorders.
