Sex-based differences of antioxidant enzyme nanoparticle effects following traumatic brain injury

Aria W. Tarudji et al.

Summary: This study found that using Pro-NPTM nanoparticles with high accumulation and retention capacity can effectively inhibit oxidative stress and reduce brain injury. The treatment effect of Pro-NPTM also differs between male and female mice, suggesting a possible gender-based difference in response to antioxidant nanoparticle delivery.

Medial prefrontal cortex stimulation disrupts observational learning in Barnes maze in rats

Motoki Yamada et al.

Summary: By electrically stimulating different brain regions in rats, researchers found that stimulating the medial prefrontal cortex disrupted observational learning in rats, while stimulating the dorsal hippocampus enhanced observational learning. This suggests that the medial prefrontal cortex plays a disruptive role in observational learning, while the dorsal hippocampus is important for it.

Hippocampal-Dependent Cognitive Dysfunction following Repeated Diffuse Rotational Brain Injury in Male and Female Mice

Laura B. Tucker et al.

Summary: Cognitive dysfunction is a common complaint following acquired traumatic brain injuries, with hippocampal circuits often implicated in resulting deficits. The study aimed to phenotype cognitive deficits in male and female mice following TBI induced by the CHIMERA device, showing significant impairment in spatial learning and memory skills. Differences in injury-induced deficits between male and female mice were observed, with cognitive impairment assessment potentially confounded by motor and visual impairments post-injury.

Antioxidant thioether core-crosslinked nanoparticles prevent the bilateral spread of secondary injury to protect spatial learning and memory in a controlled cortical impact mouse model of traumatic brain injury

Aria W. Tarudji et al.

Summary: Utilizing antioxidant nanoparticles NP1, this study demonstrates a potential treatment strategy to reduce secondary spread of traumatic brain injury. The NP1 treatment protected mice from learning and memory deficits induced by injury, likely through reduction of oxidative stress and spread of neuroinflammation. These findings suggest that NP1-mediated reduction in post-traumatic oxidative stress correlates with protection of spatial memory and learning, offering an improved therapeutic approach for TBI.
