FSD50K: An Open Dataset of Human-Labeled Sound Events

Eduardo Fonseca et al.

Summary: Most existing datasets for sound event recognition (SER) are relatively small and/or domain-specific. AudioSet, which is based on over 2 M tracks from YouTube videos, is not an open dataset. To address this issue, researchers introduce FSD50K, an open dataset containing over 51k audio clips manually labeled using 200 classes from the AudioSet Ontology. The dataset is freely distributable and detailed descriptions and analysis are provided. Baseline systems and insights on data splitting for SER are also presented.

Deep neural network models of sound localization reveal how perception is adapted to real-world environments

Andrew Francl et al.

Summary: Research shows that sound localization in real-world conditions is challenging, but training a deep neural network with human ears can accurately localize sounds. However, when the training is done in unnatural environments, the model's performance characteristics deviate from those of humans.

Perineuronal nets stabilize the grid cell network

Ane Charlotte Christensen et al.

Summary: Perineuronal nets are suggested to stabilize synaptic connections and long-term memories. The removal of perineuronal nets disrupts the temporal and spatial organization of grid cell firing, impacting the stability of representations in both novel and familiar environments. This work indicates that perineuronal nets provide a key stabilizing element for the grid cell network.
