English Language Proficiency Among Older Migrants in Australia, 2016-2046

Jeromey Temple et al.

Summary: Although Asian-born migrants tend to have lower levels of English proficiency currently, the majority of older migrants with poor proficiency are from a predominantly European background. In the future, a strong shift is projected towards an Asian-born dominance in the population of poor English speakers as some European-born migrant groups diminish in size.

Acculturative stress and eating disinhibition among Asian young adults: The role of depressive symptoms and gender

Peiyi Wang et al.

Summary: Acculturative stress is associated with eating disinhibition, and the role of depressive symptoms and gender in this association was investigated. The study found that higher acculturative stress was linked to higher eating disinhibition, and depressive symptoms had an indirect effect on this association. The indirect correlation was stronger among male young adults compared to female young adults, indicating individual differences in the underlying mechanism. The Intercultural Relations dimension of acculturative stress appeared to be driving the associations.

The association of depression and apathy with Alzheimer's disease biomarkers in a cross-cultural sample

Maria T. Greig Custo et al.

Summary: This study explores the cross-cultural differences in the association between neuropsychiatric symptoms and Alzheimer's disease biomarkers. The findings indicate that there are differences in the frequency of depressive symptoms and apathy across different diagnostic groups and ethnicities. The study also reveals correlations between apathy and reduced volume in the rostral anterior cingulate cortex, as well as a relationship between apathy and A beta levels.

Bilingualism: Pathway to Cognitive Reserve

Ellen Bialystok

Summary: The study evaluates evidence supporting the positive impact of bilingualism on cognitive reserve, showing that bilinguals demonstrate better cognitive protection in aspects such as healthy aging, age of onset of dementia symptoms, clinical level and neuropathology for patients, and rate of cognitive decline in later stages of dementia compared to monolinguals.
