Immune Modulatory Effects of Nonsteroidal Anti-inflammatory Drugs in the Perioperative Period and Their Consequence on Postoperative Outcome

Dirk J. Bosch et al.

Summary: Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs are commonly used in the perioperative period for pain management, but their immune-modulating effects may have consequences on postoperative outcomes, including systemic inflammatory response syndrome and unexpected effects on various organ systems.

Motor neuron survival is associated with reduced neuroinflammation and increased autophagy after brachial plexus avulsion injury in aldose reductase-deficient mice

Ke Zhong et al.

Summary: Brachial plexus root avulsion (BPRA) commonly occurs due to high-energy trauma, resulting in death of motoneurons and loss of motor and sensory function in the upper limb. The upregulation of aldose reductase (AR) in the spinal cord of BPRA mice is associated with disrupted autophagy, neuroinflammation, and motoneuron death. Furthermore, an AR inhibitor has shown neuroprotective effects against BPRA injury.

Immune Actions on the Peripheral Nervous System in Pain

Jessica Aijia Liu et al.

Summary: Pain can be induced by tissue injuries, diseases, and infections. The interactions between the peripheral nervous system (PNS) and immune system play crucial roles in pain sensitization processes. Immune cells release mediators that activate nociceptors and promote sensitization, while also contributing to PNS repair and pain resolution.

Phloretin suppresses neuroinflammation by autophagy-mediated Nrf2 activation in macrophages

Tess Dierckx et al.

Summary: The study shows that phloretin reduces the inflammatory phenotype of macrophages and significantly suppresses neuroinflammation in EAE. Phloretin exerts its effect by activating the Nrf2 signaling pathway, through AMPK-dependent activation of autophagy and subsequent Keap1 degradation. This discovery opens up new perspectives for phloretin as a therapeutic strategy for neuroinflammatory disorders such as MS.
