Psychometrics and diagnostics of Italian cognitive screening tests: a systematic review

Edoardo Nicolo Aiello et al.

Summary: This study investigated the existing cognitive screening tests in Italy and found that while some met basic psychometric and diagnostic requirements, many tests still exhibited poor statistical properties that limit their recommendation for clinical applications.

Neuropsychological Functioning in Primary Dystonia: Updated and Expanded Multidomain Meta-Analysis

Stephen L. Aita et al.

Summary: This meta-analysis study found that patients with primary dystonia showed poorer cognitive performance in neuropsychological tests across multiple domains. The results suggest that cognitive slowing may occur in dystonia patients beyond the effects of motor symptoms.

Cognitive and Neuropsychiatric Impairment in Dystonia

Grace A. Bailey et al.

Summary: Recent literature has focused on evaluating psychiatric and cognitive symptoms in dystonia. Depressive and anxiety-related symptoms have been found to be the most common, while less explored symptoms such as self-harm, suicidal ideation, and substance abuse have also been studied. In terms of cognitive function, there have been inconsistent results, with impairments observed in higher cognitive functions such as social cognition, as well as disruptions in visual and auditory sensory processing. Dystonia exhibits heterogeneity in psychiatric and cognitive symptoms, highlighting the need for further research to identify endophenotypes and improve diagnostic accuracy, symptom recognition, and management.

The Montreal Cognitive Assessment (MoCA): updated norms and psychometric insights into adaptive testing from healthy individuals in Northern Italy

Edoardo Nicolo Aiello et al.

Summary: This study aimed to update region-specific norms for the Italian MoCA and provide information on sensitivity and discriminative capability at the item level. Age and education significantly predicted all MoCA measures, while substantial disagreements with previous norms classifications were detected. Certain items in the MoCA were found to lack sensitivity, particularly in the orientation and memory tasks.

Adult onset dystonia: A disorder of the collicular-pulvinar-amygdala network

Shameer Rafee et al.

Summary: This article proposes that adult onset dystonia syndrome may be related to disruption in the covert-attentional network, and more research is needed to elucidate its pathophysiology. International, multidisciplinary, multicentre studies are recommended to uncover the prevalence of non-motor symptoms in unaffected relatives.
