Independently Controlling Stochastic Field Realization Magnitude and Phase Statistics for the Construction of Novel Partially Coherent Sources

Milo W. Hyde

Summary: This paper presents a method for independently controlling the field and irradiance statistics of a partially coherent beam. By including control over irradiance statistics in addition to the cross-spectral density function, this method expands existing synthesis approaches and enables the design, modeling, and simulation of new partially coherent beams. The expressions derived in the paper relate the ensemble moments of the fields to those of the desired partially coherent beam, allowing for the generation of random optical field realizations with proper statistics and validation of the technique through comparison with theoretical results.

Insensitivity of higher order topologically charged Laguerre-Gaussian beams to dynamic turbulence impact

Pramod Panchal et al.

Summary: The propagation characteristics of topologically charged Laguerre-Gaussian beams through a dynamic pseudo random phase plate mimicking atmospheric turbulence were measured in laboratory level. The results showed that beam wandering and scintillation effects were lower for topologically charged Laguerre-Gaussian beams compared to Laser Gaussian beams, with turbulence impact decreasing as the topological charges of LG beams increase. This suggests that higher order topologically charged Laguerre-Gaussian beams may be beneficial for optical communications in free space.
