Island Formation History Determines Microbial Species-Area Relationships

Deng Wei et al.

Summary: This study utilized leaves as island models to assess microbial biodiversity, revealing significant microbial SAR in deciduous trees but not in evergreen trees. There were no significant differences in microbial diversity at the alpha diversity level, but significant differences were observed in beta diversity. Consistent historical background may mask microbial SAR, highlighting the importance of intensive sampling and consistent historical background for understanding microbial SAR.

Flora and Vegetation of Yunnan, Southwestern China: Diversity, Origin and Evolution

Hua Zhu et al.

Summary: Yunnan's complicated geological history, unique geography, and diverse topography have led to the formation of various habitats with high levels of biodiversity. The local flora and vegetation have been shaped by a combination of tropical and subtropical distributions, as well as specific geological events such as uplifts and rotations. The formation of different plant formations in Yunnan is also influenced by its position in relation to other geological blocks.

Two new nematode-trapping fungi (Arthrobotrys, Orbiliaceae) from Yunnan, China

Xin Zhang et al.

Summary: In this study, two new species, Arthrobotrys jindingensis and A. tongdianensis, isolated from freshwater sediment and terrestrial soil in Lanping county, Yunnan, China, were introduced based on morphology and multi-locus phylogenetic analysis. The phylogenetic analysis provides strong support for them as two new species within the genus Arthrobotrys. Descriptions and illustrations of these two species are provided in this paper.

Rare taxa maintain the stability of crop mycobiomes and ecosystem functions

Chao Xiong et al.

Summary: The composition of plant-associated fungal communities is primarily influenced by compartment niche and host species rather than environmental factors. Abundant fungal taxa in crop-related communities are mainly dominated by a few taxa, while the majority of diversity comes from rare taxa. Different plant compartments are controlled by different ecological processes, with rare taxa playing a key role in fungal co-occurrence networks and ecosystem functioning.

Interactive Tree Of Life (iTOL) v5: an online tool for phylogenetic tree display and annotation

Ivica Letunic et al.

Summary: The Interactive Tree Of Life is an online tool for displaying, manipulating, and annotating phylogenetic and other trees. The latest version 5 introduces a new tree display engine and several new features, such as a new dataset type and expanded annotation options. Users can now also manually annotate trees by hand, providing more flexibility and control.

The microbial rare biosphere: current concepts, methods and ecological principles

Francisco Pascoal et al.

Summary: Our ability to describe low abundance populations in natural microbial communities is increasing rapidly, but an integrative view of the 'rare biosphere' is still lacking. This review provides a comprehensive overview of the microbial rare biosphere, historical perspective, current knowledge, emerging insights, and methodological advances. It also discusses how the rare biosphere fits into different conceptual models used to explain microbial community assembly mechanisms, composition, and function.
