Properties of Anion Exchange Membranes with a Focus on Water Electrolysis

Hamza Khalid et al.

Summary: This study investigates the mechanical properties, ion conductivity, alkaline stability, and water permeability of alkaline membranes by measuring stress-strain curves in temperature-controlled water. The results show that PI-15 and mTPN have higher ion conductivity, and mTPN has the highest water permeability.

Overview: State-of-the Art Commercial Membranes for Anion Exchange Membrane Water Electrolysis

Dirk Henkensmeier et al.

Summary: Water electrolysis is considered a promising method for storing and distributing large amounts of renewable energy, but current technologies face challenges such as high costs and scarce catalysts. Anion exchange membrane (AEM) water electrolysis is seen as a potential solution, with advantages including low cost, high operational capacity, and fast response times.

PBI nanofiber mat-reinforced anion exchange membranes with covalently linked interfaces for use in water electrolysers

Malikah Najibah et al.

Summary: The study investigates the reinforcement of anion exchange membranes using polybenzimidazole nanofiber mats filled with the bromomethylated precursor of ultra-stable AEM material mTPN. The optimized PBI/mTPN-50.120 composite membrane shows decreased length swelling, increased tensile strength, and Young's modulus while maintaining high conductivity. In an electrolyser, the membrane demonstrated stable performance over 200 hours of testing.
