Ultrathin Water-Cast Polymer Membranes for Hydrogen Purification

Jongmyeong Lee et al.

Summary: In this study, a water-casting method was proposed to produce high-permselectivity thin-film composite (TFC) membranes for hydrogen purification. The film integrity and thickness were controlled by adjusting the spreadability of the casting solution. Under optimized conditions, the water-cast TFC membrane showed high hydrogen permeance and selectivity, making it suitable for meeting the demand for pure hydrogen.

Perspective on the hydrogen economy as a pathway to reach net-zero CO2 emissions in Europe

Mijndert van der Spek et al.

Summary: The role of hydrogen in the energy transition has evolved over the years, and the current focus is on its versatility in aiding the transition to CO2 neutrality. However, strong political support and robust infrastructure design are necessary for the realization of the hydrogen economy. Multiple barriers need to be addressed, including technology development, infrastructure co-creation, policy, market design, and business model development. This article provides a comprehensive understanding of the elements in the hydrogen economy, its current state, and the gaps that need to be filled.

The present condition and outlook for hydrogen-natural gas blending technology

Min Ju Chae et al.

Summary: The article proposes a method of using existing natural gas pipelines to transport mixed gas (hydrogen-natural gas) and studies the properties of the mixed gas, the durability of the pipeline, and gas loss from leakage. The survey results suggest that if the hydrogen concentration is below 20%, it does not significantly affect gas quality, safety, risk, materials, and network capacity. The article also presents suitable hydrogen supply methods for domestic use.

Surprising olefin/paraffin separation performance recovery of highly aged carbon molecular sieve hollow fiber membranes by a super-hyperaging treatment

Wulin Qiu et al.

Summary: The study demonstrates successful recovery of aged carbon molecular sieve (CMS) fibers through super-hyperaging technique, achieving satisfactory propylene permeance with optimal selectivity. A super-hyperaging temperature of around 280 degrees Celsius is shown to provide the best balance between permeance and selectivity. The regenerated CMS membrane surpasses the polymer permeance-selectivity tradeoff upper bound, with a hypothetical mechanism for the super-hyperaging recovery of aged CMS fibers discussed.

Hydrogen Economy and Role of Hythane as a Bridging Solution: A Perspective Review

Bhavikkumar Mahant et al.

Summary: Molecular hydrogen is considered the most optimistic solution for achieving a carbon-neutral energy economy, with current production primarily dependent on conventional fossil fuels, but research on utilizing potential renewable and biological sources is ongoing. Due to its small molecule size, hydrogen has poor volumetric storage efficiency, leading to active exploration of creative storage methods.

The effect of chain rigidity and microporosity on the sub-ambient temperature gas separation properties of intrinsic microporous polyimides

Wenhui Ji et al.

Summary: The relationship between the rigidity, microporosity, and ideal gas separation properties in polymers of intrinsic microporosity (PIM) is important but understudied. Research comparing two different PIM polymers, PIM-DB-PI and PIM-PI-1, showed that both rigidity and microporosity play key roles in fine-tuning gas transport through polymer membranes. Microporosity has a dominant effect on gas diffusion selectivity, while rigidity primarily impacts the critical diffusion penetrate size of PIM-PI membranes.
