A novel membrane photo-electro oxidizer for advanced treatment of coal processing wastewater: Fouling control and permeate quality

Xiaolei Zhang et al.

Summary: This study proposed and evaluated a novel membrane-photo-electrochemical oxidation (MPEO) process for the advanced treatment of coal processing wastewater. The MPEO process achieved sustainable and continuous operation with excellent color and turbidity removal. By effectively degrading macro-organic molecules into small molecules, the MPEO system proved to be efficient in treating chemical industrial wastewater containing refractory organics.

Mitigation of reverse osmosis membrane fouling by electrochemical-microfiltration- activated carbon pretreatment

Xiaolei Zhang et al.

Summary: In this study, a hybrid electrochemical-microfiltration-granular activated carbon adsorption (e-MF-GAC) pretreatment process was developed and demonstrated for controlling reverse osmosis (RO) fouling. Compared to ultrafiltration (UF), e-MF-GAC pretreatment resulted in 30% higher permeate flux. Results in this study validate the hypothesis of complementarity among individual treatment processes of e-MF-GAC for removing foulants, leading to superior performance over conventional UF pretreatment.

Coagulation enhanced high-rate contact-stabilization process for pretreatment of municipal wastewater: Simultaneous organic capture and phosphorus removal

Hao Wang et al.

Summary: In this study, a coagulation enhanced high-rate contact-stabilization process was established to simultaneously capture carbon and remove phosphorus. The results showed that this process achieved stable removal of carbon and phosphorus under specific molar ratios. Additionally, controlling the dosage of coagulants was found to improve the carbon capture efficiency.

Development of a novel electrocoagulation membrane reactor with electrically conductive membranes as cathode to mitigate membrane fouling

Li Li Xu et al.

Summary: The study developed a novel electrocoagulation membrane reactor and systematically investigated key operational conditions to determine their synergistic influence on reactor performance. It was found that the reactor exhibited optimal antifouling behavior, with pH and current density affecting fouling mitigation. Increasing applied voltage led to a stronger repulsion force and looser fouling layer, ultimately decreasing flux decline. This study provides a simple and feasible strategy for fabricating a novel electrocoagulation membrane reactor to address membrane fouling issues.

Summary: Integrating electrocoagulation and a conductive membrane into AnMBR to form eAnMBR significantly improves phosphorus removal rate and extends membrane service cycle. Low extracellular polymeric substance concentration and large floc size were found in the mixed liquid of eAnMBR, inducing a porous and hydrophilic cake layer.

Phosphorous removal from anaerobically digested municipal sludge centrate by an electrocoagulation reactor using metal (Al, Fe and Al-Fe) scrap anodes

Mehmet Kobya et al.

Summary: Phosphates, major contributors to eutrophication and algal blooms, were successfully removed from sludge centrate effluent using packed-bed electrocoagulation with iron, aluminum, and aluminum-iron hybrid scrap anodes. High phosphorus removal efficiencies were achieved under optimized operating conditions, with corresponding costs calculated for each type of scrap metal. Metal-phosphorus precipitation and adsorption were identified as key mechanisms for phosphorus removal in this study.
