Reformulating the permselectivity-conductivity tradeoff relation in ion-exchange membranes

Jovan Kamcev

Summary: Polymer membranes used in separation applications show a tradeoff between permeability and selectivity. For ion-exchange membranes, this tradeoff is expressed in terms of membrane permselectivity and ionic conductivity. A new framework reformulates the tradeoff relationship in terms of ion concentrations and diffusion coefficients, allowing for a direct comparison between counter-ion throughput and counter-ion/co-ion selectivity, demonstrating generalizability for cation-exchange membranes in vanadium redox flow batteries.

Ionic conductivity of ion-exchange membranes: Measurement techniques and salt concentration dependence

Jose C. Diaz et al.

Summary: Accurate measurements of membrane ionic conductivity are essential for understanding ion transport, but there is no standardized technique for such measurements. Discrepancies in reported ionic conductivity values for common commercial membranes are common. This study presents a non-invasive method based on electrochemical impedance spectroscopy to address external resistances in thin membranes equilibrated with dilute salt solutions.

Intrinsic electronic conductivity of individual atomically resolved amyloid crystals reveals micrometer-long hole hopping via tyrosines

Catharine Shipps et al.

Summary: The study demonstrates that amyloid proteins can efficiently transport charges at physiologically relevant potentials without the need for metal cofactors or large driving forces. The conductivity is attributed to a multistep hopping mechanism, with hole transport rate influenced by proton acceptors and proximity to tyrosines. Surprisingly, conductivity increases significantly upon cooling due to higher availability of proton acceptors.
