Antibiotic removal and antibiotic resistance genes fate by regulating bioelectrochemical characteristics in microbial fuel cells

Xiao-Li Yang et al.

Summary: Bioelectrochemical characteristics play a critical role in antibiotics removal and ARGs control in microbial fuel cell (MFC). The current intensity has a stronger effect on the system than the anode potential. Appropriate regulation of bio-electrochemical characteristics is essential for improving electricity generation and controlling ARGs.

A new integrated single-chamber air-cathode microbial fuel cell-Anaerobic membrane bioreactor system for improving methane production and membrane fouling mitigation

Yuankun Hao et al.

Summary: A novel integrated system combining an anaerobic membrane bioreactor (AnMBR) and a single-chamber air cathode microbial fuel cell (ScMFC) was designed to enhance methane production and reduce membrane fouling. The system delivered a stable micro-bioelectric field environment with a high voltage output. Compared to the conventional AnMBR, this system increased methane production and reduced soluble microbial product and extracellular polymeric substances concentrations. In addition, the trans membrane pressure also remained in a slow growth status, prolonging the system's operation cycle.

The interplay of active energy harvesting and wastewater organic loading regulates fermentation products and microbiomes in microbial fuel cells

Xiaoxue Mei et al.

Summary: This study investigates the effects of different operation conditions on system performance and microbial community composition in microbial fuel cells (MFCs) used for treating fruit juice wastewater (FJW). The results show that both energy harvesting regime and organic loading significantly influence current production, organic matter decomposition, product distribution, and microbial community in the MFCs.

Durum wheat semolina-modified ceramic membranes as novel porous separators for enhanced power generation and wastewater remediation using microbial fuel cell

Bhargav R. Patel et al.

Summary: This proof-of-concept study demonstrates the improved performance efficiency and wastewater treatment efficiency of a dual-chambered microbial fuel cell equipped with semolina-modified ceramic membranes. The modified membranes exhibit enhanced water uptake, proton mobility, and low oxygen diffusion, resulting in increased power and current density output. The findings suggest that semolina-modified ceramic membranes have the potential to be a cost-effective alternative in the high-efficiency production of bioelectricity using microbial fuel cells.

Understanding the effects of electrical exposure mode on membrane fouling in an electric anaerobic ceramic membrane bioreactor

Xiaoli Su et al.

Summary: The study demonstrates that EAnMBR using intermittent electric field mode can effectively alleviate fouling, improve wastewater treatment efficiency, and perform well in energy saving. By promoting microbial metabolism, the IEF mode helps to enhance the removal efficiency of carbonate and nitrogenous substances. The antifouling mechanisms were unveiled under both operation modes.
