Influence of concentration and temperature dependent dielectric constants on the thermodynamics of electrolytes

Adriel O. Quinones et al.

Summary: The osmotic coefficient, individual and mean activity coefficients of electrolytes in water with concentration-dependent dielectric constant are calculated using symmetric Poisson-Boltzmann theory, modified Poisson-Boltzmann theory, and mean spherical approximation. The same thermodynamic quantities are also computed for solutions with temperature-dependent dielectric constant. Theoretical predictions are compared with Monte Carlo simulation results, showing good agreement for osmotic coefficient and mean activity. Modified Poisson-Boltzmann theory accurately represents individual activities, while symmetric Poisson-Boltzmann theory and mean spherical approximation only provide qualitative results. The symmetric Poisson-Boltzmann theory deviates from simulations at higher concentrations.

Self-Assembly MXene-rGO/CoNi Film with Massive Continuous Heterointerfaces and Enhanced Magnetic Coupling for Superior Microwave Absorber

Xiao Li et al.

Summary: This study reports a carefully designed electrostatic self-assembly strategy to fabricate magnetized MXene-rGO/CoNi films, which exhibit excellent microwave absorption performance. The insertion of CoNi nanoparticles decorated rGO nanosheets into MXene layers effectively reduces the high permittivity, and the strong magnetic coupling between FeCo alloy nanoparticles enhances the magnetic loss capability.

Enhanced Electromagnetic Shielding and Thermal Conductive Properties of Polyolefin Composites with a Ti3C2TX MXene/Graphene Framework Connected by a Hydrogen-Bonded Interface

Xue Tan et al.

Summary: The rapid advancement of miniaturized devices in terms of operation speed, transmission efficiency, and power density has led to an increasing demand for electromagnetic interference (EMI) shielding and thermal management materials in the semiconductor industry. This study proposes a fold fabrication strategy to enhance the EMI shielding and thermal conductive properties of commonly used polyolefin components (such as polyethylene) by incorporating premodified MXene nanosheets and a well-aligned, seamless graphene framework into the matrix. The results demonstrate that nanoscale interface engineering can further improve the physical properties of the composites, enabling high-performance polymer composites for use in microelectronics and microsystems.

Effect of hydrolysis time, pH and surfactant type on stability of hydrochloric acid hydrolyzed nanocellulose

D. Pawcenis et al.

Summary: Nanocelluloses have attracted much attention due to their mechanical properties, high surface area, and porosity. Sulfuric acid is commonly used for the production of cellulose nanocrystals, but it leads to cellulose esterification and lower thermal stability. Hydrochloric acid hydrolysis does not result in functionalization of the nanocellulose surface, but it lacks ionic interactions and causes poor colloidal stability. This study aimed to obtain stable aqueous suspensions of cellulose nanofibrils (CNF) through hydrochloric acid hydrolysis. The best stabilizing effect was achieved at pH 5-9 and with nonionic surfactants.

Electroosmotic transport and current rectification of viscoelastic electrolyte in a conical pore nanomembrane

Mohit Trivedi et al.

Summary: Nanomembranes have a wide range of applications in water treatment, separation, and analysis. Nanopores can be used for component separation and single molecule analysis. However, the theoretical understanding of electroosmotic transport in nanopores is still limited. This study numerically investigates the ionic current rectification in a conical nanopore, exploring its potential applications in biosensors and micro-scale pumping devices. The effects of different fluid characteristics on electroosmotic flow are also compared.

Carboxymethyl Bacterial Cellulose from Nata de Coco: Effects of NaOH

Pornchai Rachtanapun et al.

Summary: Carboxymethyl bacterial cellulose (CMCn) was synthesized from bacterial cellulose from nata de coco by carboxymethylation using different NaOH concentrations, with the optimal condition resulting from 30g/100mL NaOH providing the highest DS value. The tensile strength of CMCn films increased with NaOH concentration up to 30g/100mL, but decreased at higher concentrations. The highest elongation at break was obtained from CMCn films synthesized with 50g/100mL NaOH concentration.

Shanshan Xu et al.

Summary: This review article summarizes membrane technologies for lithium extraction from Chinese salt-lake brines, including membrane extraction, nanofiltration, lithium ion-sieve, electrodialysis, and forward osmosis. The focus is on achieving high selectivity and adsorption capacity for lithium extraction, as well as proposing carbon neutral FO for concentrating lithium-enriched brines. The strategies discussed in this article aim to address the urgent need for efficient lithium extraction from high MLR brines.

Controlling interlayer spacing and organic solvent permeation in laminar graphene oxide membranes modified with crosslinker

Keizo Nakagawa et al.

Summary: Two-dimensional (2D) laminar membranes are being studied for organic solvent nanofiltration, but controlling interlayer spacing and stable solvent permeation remain challenges. In this study, GO membranes with TEOA crosslinker were found to effectively suppress swelling and the affinity between TEOA and solvents correlated with interlayer spacing, indicating the importance of crosslinker-solvent affinity in controlling membrane performance.

A Lamellar MXene (Ti3C2Tx)/PSS Composite Membrane for Fast and Selective Lithium-Ion Separation

Zong Lu et al.

Summary: The study involves the creation of a 2D laminar membrane with Li+ selective transport channels by stacking MXene nanosheets with poly(sodium 4-styrene sulfonate) (PSS) containing active sulfonate sites. This membrane shows excellent Li+ selectivity in ionic mixture solutions and high Li+ permeation rate. The selective and rapid transport of partially dehydrated Li+ within subnanochannels is attributed to precisely controlled interlayer spacing and weaker ion-terminal interaction.
