Biomimetic Activator of Sonodynamic Ferroptosis Amplifies Inherent Peroxidation for Improving the Treatment of Breast Cancer

Anwei Zhou et al.

Summary: This study presents a multimodal strategy to improve ferroptosis by developing an engineered erythrocyte called SAFE that activates ferroptosis and oxygen-riched sonodynamic therapy. The results show that SAFE can supply oxygen, produce ROS, and induce lipid peroxidation, effectively inhibiting tumor growth.

Contribution of ferroptosis and GPX4's dual functions to osteoarthritis progression

Yu Miao et al.

Summary: This study demonstrated the presence of ferroptosis in osteoarthritis (OA) and identified glutathione peroxidase 4 (GPX4) as a crucial regulator of OA. By downregulating GPX4 expression, the crosstalk between ferroptosis and extracellular matrix degradation pathways influenced the progression of OA.

Sinapine induced ferroptosis in non-small cell lung cancer cells by upregulating transferrin/transferrin receptor and downregulating SLC7A11

Min Shao et al.

Summary: This study found that Sinapine (SI) can induce a novel form of cell death, ferroptosis, in non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) cells by increasing intracellular ferrous iron, lipid peroxidation, and reactive oxygen species (ROS). SI also exerts its anti-tumor effects by upregulating transferrin and transferrin receptor and downregulating SLC7A11. In vivo experiments confirmed the inhibitory effects of SI on NSCLC growth.

Therapeutic approaches in the management of knee osteoarthritis (Review)

Bogdan Uivaraseanu et al.

Summary: Osteoarthritis (OA) is a common degenerative disease that affects the elderly. The treatment for knee OA is complex and requires consideration of clinical symptoms and disease progression. Conservative therapy should be the initial approach, with surgery considered if conservative treatment fails. This review analyzes available surgical and nonsurgical treatments for knee OA, and discusses their benefits and advantages.

Deferoxamine Alleviates Osteoarthritis by Inhibiting Chondrocyte Ferroptosis and Activating the Nrf2 Pathway

Zhou Guo et al.

Summary: The study confirmed the occurrence of ferroptosis in chondrocytes under inflammatory conditions, with inhibition of chondrocyte ferroptosis alleviating chondrocyte destruction. Erastin-induced chondrocyte ferroptosis stimulated increased MMP13 expression and decreased collagen II expression. DFO suppressed chondrocyte ferroptosis and promoted activation of the Nrf2 antioxidant system, essential for chondrocyte protection, suggesting DFO injection as a potential new OA treatment.

Summary: Cell death is a fundamental physiological process in all living organisms, playing important roles in embryonic development, organ maintenance, aging, immune responses, and autoimmunity. Recent research has significantly increased our understanding of the mechanisms orchestrating different types of programmed cell death and how they affect the balance of cell fates. Various modalities of cell death, such as apoptosis, necroptosis, and pyroptosis, have been studied to highlight both common and unique pathways and their impact on the surrounding cells and the organism as a whole.
