Construction phosphorus/nitrogen-containing flame-retardant and hydrophobic coating toward cotton fabric via layer-by-layer assembly

Summary: This study successfully developed an effective multilayer coating by assembling phosphorylated polyethyleneimine (P-PEI) and hydrophobic modified ammonium polyphosphate (MAPP) on the surface of cotton fabric, resulting in high flame retardancy and desirable hydrophobicity. The coated cotton fabric exhibited self-extinguishing behavior in vertical burning tests and showed a significant decrease in heat release and fire growth rate index. The multilayer coating contributed to flame retardant activities in both condensed- and gas-phase, forming thermally stable char residues and inhibiting the release of flammable gases.

Renewable Furan-Based Epoxy Resins Derived from 5-Hydroxymethylfurfural and Furfural

Summary: The rapid depletion of oil reserves has increased interest in researching biobased polymers derived from renewable resources. Furan-based compounds, due to their aromatic characteristics and sustainability, are considered suitable replacements for petro-sourced chemicals. This study presents a mild and scalable synthesis of furan-based diepoxide monomers from readily available 5-hydroxymethylfurfural (HMF) and furfural. Various diamines were used as curing agents, resulting in a series of biobased epoxy/amine systems. Thermal and mechanical evaluation demonstrated that the synthetic furan-based epoxy resins have the potential to complement current phenyl-based polymer materials.
