Corrosion performance and biological properties of electrophoretically deposited bioactive glass-zirconia core-shell composite coating on Ti6Al4V substrate

B. Hoomehr et al.

Summary: A bioactive glass-zirconia core-shell composite coating was studied to improve the biological and corrosion performance of the Ti6Al4V substrate. The coating showed higher barrier performance and maintained bioactivity compared to a bioactive glass coating group. Additionally, the core-shell coating exhibited non-cytotoxicity and promoted cell proliferation, possibly due to the presence of a zirconia shell for pH control.

Optimisation on the stability of CaO-doped partially stabilised zirconia by microwave heating

Yeqing Ling et al.

Summary: The study utilized controllable microwave heating to improve the stability of partially stabilized zirconia, and found that the stability increased with higher heating temperatures. Experimental results indicated that the martensitic transformation temperature of zirconia was reduced under microwave radiation.

Custom-Made Zirconium Dioxide Implants for Craniofacial Bone Reconstruction

Marcin Kozakiewicz et al.

Summary: The study evaluated the use of ZrO2 implants for craniofacial bone defect reconstruction by assessing osteoblast cytotoxicity and genotoxicity. In vitro tests showed no cytotoxicity for all investigated materials, while genotoxicity was observed in alumina particle air-abraded ZrO2 implants. Custom in vivo clinical ZrO2 implants showed aesthetic and stable results at 6 months and 6 to 8 years postoperatively, suggesting they are a viable option for craniofacial surgery.

High-Temperature Oxidation and Wear Behavior of (Fe,Cr)Al Intermetallic Compound and (Fe,Cr)Al-Al2O3 Nanocomposites

F. Sourani et al.

Summary: The study found that (Fe,Cr)Al intermetallic compound demonstrated superior oxidation resistance, while the (Fe,Cr)Al-10%vol Al2O3 nanocomposite showed the best wear resistance performance. Nanocomposites containing 5% and 10% of Al2O3 had the lowest friction coefficient, with significant overall improvement in wear behavior despite somewhat decreased oxidation resistance.

Electrophoretic deposition of bioactive glass/zirconia core-shell nanoparticles on Ti6Al4V substrate

B. Hoomehr et al.

Summary: Bioactive glass-zirconia core-shell spherical nanoparticles were successfully synthesized using sol-gel and sonochemical methods and coated on Ti6Al4V substrate to enhance the implant-tissue interface. The application of dopamine as a surface treatment agent, cathodic electrophoretic deposition, and polyethyleneimine improved the adhesion between the coating and substrate. The presence of core-shell nanoparticles helped overcome the challenges in simultaneous deposition of zirconia and bioactive glass nanoparticles.

Oral Tissue Interactions and Cellular Response to Zirconia Implant-Prosthetic Components: A Critical Review

Marcel F. Kunrath et al.

Summary: This critical review evaluates the applications of zirconia in dental components and its interactions with oral tissues, highlighting the importance of surface treatment methods and cell responses for clinical implications. The results suggest that surface treatments of zirconia can lead to excellent osseointegration and biological seal, providing encouraging prospects for rapid bone adhesion. Dental devices manufactured from zirconia are structurally and chemically stable with biocompatibility levels allowing for safe and long-term function in the oral environment.

Mechanical analysis of hip & knee implants regarding different activities conditions and different materials

Sadiq J. Abbass et al.

Summary: Biomechanical analysis combines mechanical engineering with biology to understand biological materials behavior, using finite element analysis for deformation and stress. Three-dimensional implant geometries were created using CAD software and studied in ANSYS under various loading conditions. Results showed stress and deformation increased with daily activities, from the smallest values during standing to higher values during walking, running, and jumping.
