Modeling, design, materials and fabrication of bipolar plates for proton exchange membrane fuel cell: A review

Kangning Xiong et al.

Summary: Bipolar plate plays a crucial role in proton exchange membrane fuel cells, and the pursuit of superior bipolar plates has become a technical challenge and future trend. Research shows that the three-dimensional, steady-state, multi-phase, computational fluid dynamics model is the most popular method for evaluating flow field design, with influencing factors such as channel-land dimensions and flow channel shape.

Synthesis and Ex-Situ characterizations of diamond-like carbon coatings for metallic bipolar plates in PEM fuel cells

Ibrahim Alaefour et al.

Summary: This study investigates diamond-like carbon (DLC) film coatings as corrosion protection coatings for metallic-based bipolar plates. It is found that higher deposition power and absence of argon gas result in more sp3 bonds and higher electrical resistivity. Coatings deposited from methane exhibit superior adhesion to stainless steel substrates, and coatings with low power and high argon gas percentage provide better anti-corrosion protection.

Corrosion resistant and conductive TiN/TiAlN multilayer coating on 316L SS: a promising metallic bipolar plate for proton exchange membrane fuel cell

S. Pugal Mani et al.

Summary: The single layers of TiN, TiAlN and TiN/TiAlN multilayer coatings were deposited on 316L SS bipolar plate by physical vapor deposition technique. Studies showed that TiN/TiAlN coating exhibited better water management and higher electrochemical impedance behavior in the fuel cell, even meeting the U.S. Department of Energy's 2020 target, and significantly reducing the metal ions dissolution.

Graphene coating on a nickel-copper alloy (Monel 400) for microbial corrosion resistance: Electrochemical and surface characterizations

Saad Al-Saadi et al.

Summary: The study demonstrates that graphene coating deposited on Monel 400 alloy surface by chemical vapour deposition can effectively enhance its corrosion resistance in a marine environment containing sulphate reducing bacteria. The coating, replacing the native protective oxide layer, shows superior corrosion resistance in both abiotic and biotic solutions. The post-corrosion characterization using SEM and FTIR supports the electrochemical results.
