Understanding the conduction mechanism of acceptor-doped ceria oxygen ion conductors by photoluminescence analysis

Huan Wang et al.

Summary: Doping and co-doping are effective strategies for enhancing ion conductivity in oxygen ion conductors. This study investigates the structural origin and conduction mechanism of bulk conduction upon cation doping using photoluminescence properties. The results suggest that the locations of oxygen vacancies are influenced by the doping cations. Additionally, the study highlights the importance of cation electronegativity in ion conduction and proposes a strategy for studying the relationship between doping and local structures using photoluminescence.

Understanding oxide ion transport in yttria stabilized zirconia: fresh insights from molecular dynamics simulations

Sudeshna Madhual et al.

Summary: A comprehensive molecular dynamics investigation was conducted on yttria stabilized zirconia. The study found that the lattice parameter increased with concentration, and the diffusivity of oxide ion showed an optimum value around 10 mol%. Additionally, it was discovered that oxygen migration occurred along specific channels, providing new insights into the oxygen migration mechanism.

Summary: This study investigates steam electrolysis for hydrogen production in solid oxide electrolysis cells, comparing the performance of different doped zirconia electrolytes. It is found that SCGZ electrolyte doped with Sc3+, Ce4+, and Gd3+ exhibits the lowest activation energy of conduction and highest electrochemical performance. Durability tests show that SCGZ electrolyte-based cells have stable performance under prolonged operation.

Strain-modified ionic conductivity in rare-earth substituted ceria: effects of migration direction, barriers, and defect-interactions

George F. Harrington et al.

Summary: This study investigates how ionic transport in functional oxides is influenced by strain, particularly focusing on rare-earth substituted ceria epitaxial films under biaxial strain. The research shows that the out-of-plane transport is more sensitive to strain than in-plane transport, and the size of rare-earth substitutionals significantly impacts the strain effect on ionic conductivity. By simulating conductivity using the kinetic Monte Carlo method based on density functional theory, the study reveals that both migration barriers and defect interactions contribute to the strain-modified transport.
