Fabrication of a microlens array featuring a high aspect ratio with a swinging diamond tool

XinQuan Zhang et al.

Summary: This paper proposes a novel method based on the slow tool servo turning technique for fabricating high aspect ratio microlens arrays. The method introduces a rotational motion to adjust the tool clearance angle in real time and effectively prevent tool interference. Experimental results demonstrate the superiority of the proposed method in fabricating high-quality lens arrays with a high aspect ratio.

Fabrication of polygonal Fresnel lenses with a rotating cutting tool on three-axis ultraprecision lathes

ZaoZao Chen et al.

Summary: In this paper, a high-precision rotating platform is integrated into a three-axis ultra-precision machine tool to adapt the cutting tool to the rotation of the spindle, ensuring the tool rake face remains perpendicular to the direction of relative motion throughout the machining process of polygonal Fresnel lenses. Experimental results demonstrate that the profile accuracy of the machined workpiece meets industrial application standards.

Diamond shaping of blazed gratings on freeform surfaces

Nicholas Yew Jin Tan et al.

Summary: The study of spectral signatures of various elements has been made possible through the ability to diffract light with optical gratings and control light with lenses and mirrors. As devices aim to become more compact while maintaining efficiency, integration of functions is necessary to reduce component count. However, the challenge lies in manufacturing integrated microstructures on complex forms due to lack of axial flexibility.

Ultra-precision direct diamond shaping of functional micro features

Nicholas Yew Jin Tan et al.

Summary: This paper introduces a method to fabricate non-rotary symmetric, intricate, and freeform elements using Ultra-Precision Machining (UPM) technology, Virtual Rotating Tool Shaping (VRTS), and Direct Diamond Shaping (DDS). VRTS synchronizes linear and rotational motions of the machine to align the tool with the cutting direction, while DDS achieves a combination of linear and rotary features by planing.
