High strength Al-Cu-Mg based alloy with synchronous improved tensile properties and hot-cracking resistance suitable for laser powder bed fusion

Q. Z. Wang et al.

Summary: This study proposes and successfully manufactures a novel crack-free Al-Cu-Mg-Si-Ti alloy with improved tensile properties and hot-cracking resistance using laser powder bed fusion (LPBF). The microstructure evolution and strengthening mechanisms are investigated, revealing that pre-precipitated D0 22-Al3Ti particles act as nuclei to refine the grains, leading to strong hot-cracking resistance. Dual-nanoprecipitation of Cu-, Mg-, and Si-rich phases is introduced to enhance the mechanical performance of the alloy.

Selective laser melting of micron-sized niobium functionalized Al7075 alloy: Element evaporation and grain refinement

Zhiguang Zhu et al.

Summary: This study improves the processability and mechanical properties of high-strength Al7075 alloy using selective laser melting (SLM) by adding micron-sized niobium (Nb) powders and reducing the content of magnesium (Mg) and zinc (Zn) elements. The inoculation treatment of Nb refines the grains and heals cracks, while a lower scanning speed reduces the crack area and length density. After heat treatment, the alloy exhibits higher yield strength and elongation to fracture.

Laser powder bed fusion of Zr-modified Al-Cu-Mg alloy: Crack-inhibiting, grain refinement, and mechanical properties

Yanfang Wang et al.

Summary: In this study, Zr-modified 2024Al alloy deposits were prepared using L-PBF technology, with the addition of 1.3wt% Zr, which reduced the solidification cracking susceptibility and improved the grain structure of the alloy. After T6 heat treatment, the yield strength and ultimate tensile strength of the alloy were further increased, reaching comparable or even higher levels than conventional wrought alloys.

Effect of laser additive manufacturing on the microstructure and mechanical properties of TiB2 reinforced Al-Cu matrix composite

Q. Z. Wang et al.

Summary: Understanding the effect of reinforcements on microstructure evolution and strengthening mechanism is crucial for developing good performance aluminum matrix composites (AMCs) prepared by laser additive manufacturing (LAM). In this study, the roles of submicron-TiB2 particles in the grain morphology evolution, mechanical properties, and corresponding strengthening mechanism of the 2024Al matrix processed by laser directed energy deposition (L-DED) and laser powder bed fusion (L-PBF) were compared. The results show that the L-DED processed TiB2p/2024Al composite has equiaxed grains, while the L-PBF processed composite only shows refinement in columnar grains. Both L-DED and L-PBF fabricated 3 wt% TiB2p/2024Al composites exhibit enhanced strength and plasticity due to grain refinement. Grain boundary strengthening, dislocation strengthening, and load transfer strengthening contribute to the increased yield strength in L-DEDed TiB2p/2024Al sample.

Summary: Selective laser melting (SLM) offers significant benefits compared to traditional manufacturing techniques, but the limited materials available for SLM production restrict the industrial adoption of the technology. This study investigates the effect of laser parameters on the mechanical and microstructural properties of aluminium 2024 alloy manufactured using SLM, revealing insights into crack formation and microhardness variations.
